What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Cover dry fit with new bolts with washers about to be installed.

 

I probably missed it but were you leaking or just replaced for fun? I need to do this soon on the wife's Honda.

 

Was/have been leaking for 4-5 years. First time I noticed the leak was from the burning oil smell while towing. Took a 10mm to the bolts and noticed severe looseness at just about all 9 of them. Snugged them down and that worked. Been snugging every 1 year but only so much you can do when the gasket is past its service life. The spark plug tube gaskets (3 or 4) were leaking as well. Noticed that when doing spark plugs last week.

Youtube the process. Its not hard. Like anything its all about having the proper tools, parts, and attitude.

 

Here is the before pic. You can see the oil below valve cover. And the blow out residue around certain spark plug tubes.

 

Ahh yeah. My wife's seems to be leaking at the back of the valve cover, haven't really figured out if it's just the valve gasket or also the vtech solenoid gasket but I plan to change both. One of her coil packs had quite a bit of oil on it too. She never drives it bbn so I'm not in a hurry.

Doesn't look bad. Just need a cool day with some shade and maybe a 6 pack.

 

Got some new shoes today there 285/75/16 falken wildpeak at3. They drive so much better than my super swampers.

 

Nice. Looks like the tread will be relatively quiet on the road and may give you a bit of a boost in efficiency over the Swampers. How much lift do you have and are you having any fitment issues like rubbing when turning?

 

All washed, waxed and out on the town for date night. I think my wife may be jealous for taking these shots.

 

I really don’t how much lift it has because it’s all different suspension because of the straight axle swap, they don’t rub at all my swampers rubbed on my front leafs at full turn

 

Got the drivers side valve gasket in today (3 hrs). Drivers side is a little easier. The valve cover was pretty carboned up compared to the passenger side. Degreased it and then scraped off all the carbon deposits with a flat knife then degreased again. The spark plug tube gaskets were pretty dry rotted and harder to get out compared to passenger side.

Think some of the problems stemmed from the partially clogged PCV valve which was gunky. Put in a new PCV valve. Cleaned up the old one and its like new again and will save for future.

Test drove and she is purring nicely.

 

Any one here due an engine oil purge? Been researching differing methods. Necessary? Suggestions?

1). Kerosene purge
2). Mystery Oil purge
3). Royal Purple purge

Want to do this before/during next oil change if its worth it.

 

Haven't done what would be considered a purge but when I once neglected to change my oil for about 20k miles I did some really short changes after. Did one at 500 miles and the next at 2500, not sure it was worth the trouble but felt like I was making up for the neglect.

 

Most I’ve gone without changing the 02’ was about 6k miles. Usually, its changed about every 4500 miles.
My passenger side valve cover looked good. My drivers side had some carbon. That side seems to get the heat maybe because of a clogged PCV valve. Not sure, but she is running better than ever now.

Been dialing in on the purge and looks like Liqui Molly is the one to go with. Pour in to your old oil with engine hot and run on idle for 10 minutes, then drain and proceed like a normal oil change.

Read about 300 reviews on Amazon and some guys did 2 flushes. Old oil flush, then new sacrificial oil with another flush, then new synthetic oil (no flush) for the final until your new oil change. These were mostly BMW guys that did the double. Alot of the other people were not changing enough because of the new ‘high mileage’ oil marketing and running into sludge problems.

Did a few Youtube vids and it looks like it works. Even the new double oil change/flushers their brand new oil looked black after the second change. Some had chunks coming out.

I’ll be doing this in a few weeks as its coming time for an oil change.

 

Haven't tried their additives but I strictly run Liqui Moly synthetic in my turbo GTI. It burns less than Castrol did, I would trust anything from them. They also go by Lubro Moly.

I tried to locate an squeaking noise that doesn't sound healthy. No joy yet though

 

Ordered up some Liqui Moly and sacrificial oil with a 5 pack of Toyota oil filters on sale. Picked up a combo of oil filters and oil bolt plug washers. These are the bigger D3 filters.

 

Castrol cheapy synthetic for second flush if needed. Best price going.

 

Darkness, it’s not quite night yet but I’d say there $25 bucks well spent if they last.

That's a nice one. Probably need to do the long screwdriver stethoscope move to isolate it. If it's up front maybe a bad bushing in one of the arms or possibly the lower shock.

Flow master 40 series dual turn downs installed last week

 

I bet your gas mileage went way down because you're put revving it everywhere.
