Mountain towing capacity

Trading our 2016 Tacoma for a 2018 Tundra 5.7 8 cyl 4WD because of towing issues. The new Tundra says it’ll pull 9900#. The Tacoma capacity is 6400 but that clearly doesn’t apply to mountain driving. It was work to pull 2000#. I really don’t want to spend a bunch to find out the Tundra has the same problem. Comments?

 

I have towed a 3000# trailer without breaking a sweat, but not in the mountains. You can check out the TFL youtube videos on the Tundras towing characteristics. Little disappointed in the Tundras payload capacity though, 1200lbs for CM 4x4 with accessories. 5.7l Engine and Transmission are beastly compared to my older F150 5.4l 4x4, luv the low rpm torque band.

 

I towed 6k lbs up to ~4500ft, with absolutely no issue. I do have the TRD Dual exhaust so it did shift down quite a bit, but there is no lack of power that's for sure.
I was also loaded down with probably another 1k in the truck. Was probably a bit over the limit, but it handled like a champ.

 

I have pulled the #3,500 pound mark through the mountains with no issues. The truck would definitely handle a lot more weight

2700 dry. 3000 with stuff. Plus gear in the truck.

 

Shit, you won’t even notice it’s back there. I tow my boat at 3300 pounds at 9500 ft around Hartsel area and can’t even tell it’s behind me.

 

I’ve pulled 9000# through the mountains no problem. Be sure to use the tow haul button. Use a good weight distribution hitch. Adjust the electric brake controller until it locks the tires on the trailer and then back off a bit from there. Prepare yourself for roughly 8 MPG on a good day pulling.

You are about 800 lbs more than my Aliner. I just finished a trip (300 miles one way) across a 3300 and 4200 passes at highway speeds. No problem. The tough one was the last few miles to my buddy’s ranch, at 4100 ft going on dirt and 2 track. No problems, except for the dust. Some of the road was at 9% grade. It was a good breakin for the 4 wheel drive. I never used the tow mode as it was not a struggle. Used manual mode to keep it in 1 and 2 on he way down to save the brakes.

I heard a quote “go as fast as necessary but slow as possible”. No rush to go over rough sections, watch out for big rocks, sharp rocks and holes.
