Good morning folks! I am relatively new to the forum but have been stalking a lot of the pages for some time. The wife and I are about ready to pull the trigger and latch on to a Tundra. We are looking at the Limiteds. Here is where it gets sticky. I found a 2018 demo unit in Maryland with 5k miles. Selling price is $41,400. A local dealer said that he would match that price on a 2018 with 0 miles. While browsing the forums I am seeing a lot of folks having issues with sensors and electronics on the 18s after leveling kit was installed.

Would I be better off to spend $44k on a 17 with under 20k miles or go for the 18. I plan to level the truck but don't foresee any other mods at this point.

I'd get the new '18 so you have a better value now and for down the road. Demo unites tend to get driven hard. I dont know too much about the senor issues though.

I purchased a 2018 and wish I would have went with a 2017 model. I wasn’t aware of the TSS issues many are having once they level or lift their vehicles. My opinion would be go with the 2017 or wait for the 2019 when they should have the TSS issues resolved, hopefully.

Get the 18 Limited you get better head lights which I think is worth it. My 17 head lights suck and under powered. I like the gauge cluster better to. Plus Tundra is a brand new truck, no one else has driven it. Every scratch and dent you get to put on yourself. As for leveling guys on here can help you out. Buy new and make it how every you want. That’s my two cents.

As a owner of a 18 if I could have bought a brand new 17 I would have. The dealer I purchased from and the 3 other dealers I called and spoke with will not touch or warranty a lift on my 18. None of them could give me a straight answer about what part of the warranty if any would be affected by lifting it. So if you plan on lifting talk in depth with your dealer about lifting or get a 17

Wait, are you asking whether to spend $41k on a brand new 18 vs $44k on a 17 with 20k miles?

You'll be fine with a level on an 18, though. I've seen a couple 18s around town with big lifts (6"+), but I guess I won't assume they don't have any issues.

I had my local Toyota dealer install my Bilstein 5100 shocks which are set at 2.25 inches. No issues whatsoever with the TSS.I absolutely LOVE the dynamic radar cruise control.

Yes, that is what I am asking.... I know, it sounds dumb, right? Just throwing all my options out there. This would be my first "new" truck that I've ever bought and I don't want it ruined with warning lights and immediate issues. So the question falls back to whether the issues with the 18s are prominent enough to drop back to a 17 with miles.

Sure, makes sense. I think they're asking way too much on the 17, so if you're concerned with the tech issues on the 18s you can probably get that 17 for a lot less than $44k. I bet they took it on a trade and gave the guy $35k or so.

On the other hand, I haven't had a single issue with my 18 and I definitely like the guage cluster and headlights a lot better than the pre-18s. Good luck with your decision!

Edit: I forgot to ask, is the Limited 18 a Crewmax 4x4? If so, $41k is an excellent price and I'd say go for it!

18 TRDOR limited no issues... better value better features. Truck is under full warranty and everything will be taken care of under it should an issue present itself.

If you can get a 17 at 35k or under than I would go that route. It doesn’t matter how good of a deal you get on a new vehicle, there’s always a better deal in the used car market, always.

I got my used 2016 pro in 2016 for 36k when new they wanted 48k plus.

If headlights are the deal breaker than they are 560 from Roman plus 100 for the harness and you’ll have them for 700.

I have a stock '18 with no TSS issues, though it is going back to the dealer tomorrow because the auto-headlight feature quit on me. Not a major issue, just annoying to have a feature that simply doesn't work.

Get the 18. I looked at tons of used and could not justify the price differences... the dealers lots in Virginia are full of new ones and they are willing to negotiate.

Carmax in Maryland sells new Tundras, put your information to get a price, that’s where I got my price at and showed it to my local dealership... they matched the price.

I would go with the '18 as well. Looks like you're getting a far better deal on the '18 (apples to apples anyway) not to mention the '18 will be worth more day 1 of ownership. Seems problems with lifting especially just a level kit and TSS is hit or miss. I just picked up an '18 Sport and am not sweating when I do a level kit. Granted, it may be a few months before I do it as I will also do wheels and tires at the same time and I have other projects that I have to get done around the house before dropping a few grand on the truck. Got to keep the peace in the house. :D

Except you never truly know why it was traded in. I looked for used tundras in San Antonio for 4 months. Prices were high and there was always something wrong, either cosmetic or strange history, such as shipped in from east coast or no service history or repaired damage that didn't shown up on records search. Solid used Tundras can be tough to find in popular parts of country. I made out better on new purchase than the used inventory available during the period I looked.

I guess it’s all perception, obvious buying used is not like buying new, something is always going to be a miss, it’s not going to be perfect but use that as your negotiating fire power and save thousands.

My pro’s first owner had it for 4 months and put 17k on it. I guessing he was some type of farmer since I found it in Rosenberg tx, the bed was scratched up and because the mileage, he traded it in for a Nissan Titan diesel.

Just have to do your due diligence just like buying new, you’ll find something you’ll want.

I line-x the bed which fixed the only issue, and after 2 years It blue books between 36k-39k.

Would go ‘18 with the DRL headlights unless the ‘17 is significantly reduced.

After the changes I saw coming out for the 2018 model I never looked back to the 2017. The headlights are WAY better on the 18. I do like the added safety systems and electronic dash display. No issues with mine yet but it is still under 1,000 miles. I have confidence Toyota will fix the issues. Wife's 2016 Lexus ES has the same systems with zero issues so far.
