7 years of traveling back and forth from Alaska in the oil fields, sleeping in airports, being away from home and my family finally got to me. Very thankful for this offer. Hope it’s as good as what everyone says.

Become involved in the union. The carrier loves to mess with you. Know the agreements. Took me years before I started to educate myself.

From my own families experience, like others have stated, get involved with the union and help make great decisions together.

My brother has told me some pretty crazy stuff. Always have your head on a swivel and never rush anything. In this business, I’m just going to assume that when accidents happen, your at the mercy of luck and the Lord.

I have been in the industry for a while now on the vendor side for all the railroads. I had worked for WABCO/WABTEC as an air brake specialist in their field engineering group for 16.5 years and started working for their major competitor for the last 7 years. (Couplers, trucks systems, wheels, axles, bearings, draft sill end castings, cushioning, air brake components, hand brakes, empty load, wear protection, electronic monitoring, etc) I have been to almost every shop in the country and many overseas. I also meet fairly often with the Mechanical Department hierarchy. In fact, I will be seeing some top BNSF Mechanical brass at a sample car inspection Monday and Tuesday.
I have not been to a BNSF property where I, as an outsider, didn't feel like the working environment was great which leads me to believe they don't put up with nonsense.
I have seen many people come and go through the shops but can only offer these tidbits.

    1. Honor and integrity is everything if you expect to advance in the industry.
    2. Don't get caught up in any shop drama. Be your own man and don't let anyone get you down, they ain't going anywhere anyway.
    3. If you didn't personally do it or inspect it, DO NOT SIGN OFF ON IT!
    4. Don't turn down promotions. They may not ask again. If you think it may be over your head, it probably is but they will get you trained.
    5. Keep in mind you may have to transfer to other shops or states to remain employed in the long run.
    6. 30 years will come and go before you know it.

I think you are going to like it.
