The worst violator of the the big three is ford at the moment. They apparently have linked several computers together and if they lose communication, a system crash develops. Some of the craziest YouTube videos.. People taking the key out in reverse, Instruments going blank while at highway speeds, throttle fluctuations, fail to start, etc, etc, etc.

Yep, these electric systems are far from foolproof at this point. Now I understand that pretty much all modern vehicles, to include Toyota's, depend on electric systems to start, run and manage the engine/transmission.

But putting in electric systems where they aren't truly needed (proximity doors, digital dipsticks, traffic sensors, ect.) and making them all dependent on one another is a foolish move. Toyota seems to do the best job of not only making their electrical systems robust, but also making sure that failure of non-essential systems won't impede the functionality of your essential ones.

haha, I'm 34 and feel exactly the same way... I still like tech but I'm all about having control of what I use, for example user-replaceable headunits for infotainment

    That’d be what I’d do. If I needed a diesel, I’d buy a pre-Tier 4 Duramax or Cummins for a hauling vehicle.
