Spare Tire Hoist

Just bought a 2000 Tundra and was so excited that I didn't see any rust or leaks that I didn't even notice it didn't have a spare tire. Anyway, while looking under there I noticed that the hoist plate is rotted so it wouldn't even hold the spare anyway. Is there any way just to get the plate? Seem silly to replace the whole unit for 100 bucks when only the plate is bad. I am attaching a picture to show you what part I am talking about. Thanks!

 

check ebay, they're the same from 00 to 06.

or make your own steel plate, if you have the means.

Otherwise, they're an assembly and aren't available as separate pieces.

 

Ha! I need one for me T100! At the end of the cable ther was like a piece of metal smashed to hold the bracket that holds the tire and the cable broke loose from that metal tab and there are 4 bolts that hold the hoist but only 2 can be removed other 2 looks like the bed has to be removed @LOTSOFTOYS anyway around this? Or any other T100 owner or Taco owner see this???

 

The thinness of that braided cable sketches me out everytime I’m under the truck inspecting things. Might look into making a bracket/wedge mount as an auxillary backup.

New to the forum but thought I would chime in on this question. Just to be honest with everyone. I have no Automotive experience and I think the most technical thing I did was change my rotors on my 2009 Toyota Corolla. However I like to think myself handy and can accomplish pretty moderate tasks with direction. With that being said I replaced my girlfriends spare tire lift yesterday. You do not need to remove the truck bed.

Step 1: Remove the four bolts from the top.
Step 2: The mechanism that turns ( which lowers the cable) pull down on it.
Step 3: As you pull down on it there should be enough room for you to angle the bottom part out.
Step 4: Install new part the way you took out old part.

Hope that helps. I also went to a you pull and pic I and found a replacement for 19 dollars. I cleaned it up and it looks good as new. So I can't comment on a non oem part.

 

FWIW, the bolt that threads into the welded on nut is an M8x1.25. 16mm or 20mm length.

 

I installed the Dorman hoist with M8x1.25x16 mm bolts yesterday with the bed in place. The spare tire is out of the bed and back where it belongs.

I think the hoist is pretty secure but if I was concerned I'd take a bike lock cable and run it through the wheel and around the frame. It's be noisy if the hoist busted but at least you wouldn't drop a bomb for the motorcyclist following you.

 

@jimf909 How did you get the hoist off? What size socket did you use to remove them? I have tried 8mm-13mm and extractor sockets, and they all slip off. I'm about to cut the welded nuts off the frame.

I checked for recalls, and my VIN returns zero unrepaired recalls. I did have the airbag replaced.

 

Guess you’ll have to buy one I suppose.

 

I'm cool with having to get a new one. I want to remove the old one off.

 

I cut mine off with a cutoff wheel, and then used through bolts/nuts to attach the new one.

 

This is awesome. I'm going to use mini hack saw. Yes I know it will be slow. What is the length of the bolt? Also what did you use to clean up the rust?

 

A mini hacksaw will take you ALL DAY. Go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap angle grinder (do be mindful of which direction the sparks fly). There are religious debates about rust treatment. I like Permatex Rust Converter, and Eastwood Rust Encapsulator on top. One advantage over POR-15 is that Eastwood comes in aerosol as well. Regardless of the product(s) you choose, the key to success is preparation. I don't recall the length of the bolts (other than too long as I now see in the pic), just some I had laying around.

 

Or even a Dremel with cutoff discs. That's an easy one to pull off.

 

Ok. I saw it was only spot welded on my frame and figure I could just cut the corners and the nut would come loose.

 

I know what you mean by sparks when I was under there and saw my gas tank. Cut with the guard going from the front to the back. I have a bunch of Ryobi tools so I ended up using
