DIY: Fix for whistle after adding high flow air filter

This is to get rid of the whistle you hear very badly if you have a drop in air filter to the stock air box.

*Intake gasket w/o screen

Replacement procedure:
Remove engine cover.

Loosen the 2 hose clamps on the connecting tube between the air box and manifold and pull the tube up and out of the way.

Remove the 4 10mm bolts from the manifold and pull throttle body up out of the way.

Pull old gasket with screen out, install new gasket.

Reinstall throttle body, connecting tube and engine cover.

 

Buy the tundra 4.6 throttle body gasket, in 1st picture with 5.7 screened gasket. I tried to saw the screen out of the 5.7 gasket and i promise you it's worth the >10 price tag to just get the 4.6 one. Same diameter amd everything, just no screen.

 

I just pulled it out, used tin snips to cut out the screen and put it back in. Ten minutes max, no more annoying whistle.

 

I wonder what's the purpose of the screen though? Why did Toyota engineers have a screen there in the first place?

It doesn't look like it does much in terms of filtration, is it really just there just to make a whistle?

I would really like to know it's original purpose.

 

Hmm I can see how that would be a purpose for it. I haven't checked if mine has one but I'm pretty sure it does, after installing a trd intake the whistle became really pronounced.

But honestly I don't mind it at all, I can't really hear it over the radio anyways.

I wonder if people would complain if that whistle/whine came from a supercharger instead lol

I couldn't stand that whistle in my truck before I got rid of the screen, but I am very sensitive to high pitch sounds.

 

I had a whistle on my 05 after installing a Volant CAI. It only whistled when I was really on it so it wasn't annoying. In fact, I really enjoyed it while accelerating!
I wonder if my new tundra will do that also when I install a CAI in this one....

 

Truck came with an aftermarket AirRaid intake and throttle body spacer. The whistle was crazy-annoying! Yanked out the TBS hoping it was the culprit...nope.

Replaced the screen gasket with the plain gasket. Whistle no more, yeah buddy!!!

Super easy fix. Glad to have found this post.

Now, just waiting to find a factory air box and get the screen back in there for what ever it protects, hopefully without the whistle.

Just put in a stock air cleaner assembly. Any one looking for an Airaid intake??? Also put back the “screened” gasket, and with an OEM filter, NO whistle!

When I dropped in an AFE dry filter, I get an ever so slight whistle. But nothing like with the AirRaid intake.

 

Idk, I kinda like the whistle myself.

Agreed. I'm not a mechanic but the louder whistle after adding a performance air filter (and in my case, also removing the charcoal filter) just proves that you're getting more air flowing into your intake but it seems quite harmless to me. Unless you consider your sanity beginning to break down from the annoying whistle...

Ok, I'm wondering if I have the whistle being talked about here. I notice a very subtle, high pitched noise, almost like a dog whistle when I'm accelerating at certain RPM's. If I have the radio on, it's not noticeable. If I have the radio off and listen for it, I can hear it, but like I said, it's very quiet. Is this the same thing that is being talked about in this thread?

 

I don't understand- if you "fix" the whistle by cutting out the screen or replacing the part with one that has no screen, doesn't that defeat the purpose of having the screen, to filter out any foreign objects from getting into the engine?

Are those who "fixed" the whistle not concerned about something getting in there and not getting caught by the screen?

 

Other engines from Toyota don't have that screen just the 5.7

 

What you describe sounds like what I heard on my truck. After replacing the gasket with a screen-free gasket I still get a very slight, similar-sounding, whistle but only on start up…goes away after 5-10 seconds.

That would be your air injection pump that you are hearing.

The 5.7 in the Sequoia doesn't have the screen. The part number I listed in the first post is for the Sequoia. Same motor though.

 

Man how time flies... I didn't even remember putting that other gasket on. It's been 4 1/2 years

 

Am i crazy or did the sound from my k&n CAI actually get reduced, and kind of contemplating orderi g a gasket with the screen?

 

Could have sworn the high pitched whining was electical. Did this today, and it's easy. No more high pitched whining. Thanks for the how to video.

22271-50050 part number on Amazon says it doesn’t fit my 2016 1794 tundra. Anyone else have this same issue?
