Oil Change

Just wondering what kind of oil & oil filters everybody else uses on their Tundra's. I am approaching my first oil change on my 2012 Tundra since buying it. This is the first truck I have owned to use such a light weight oil (0w-20). I also wanted to know others opinion on full synthetic oil also. i.e. how many miles would you put on a full synthetic oil? what brand? and would you even use full synthetic vs. the regular oil? Thanks!!!!!

 

Toyota oil filter and Mobil 1 only.

 

I use a fram filter and Castrol High Mileage 5w30 out here in SoCal. Been good for 150k miles. (158k now)

 

I did my own oil change a month or two ago. It was a BIOTCH!! Make sure you have a good metric socket set with extensions ( to remove skid plate) and the oil filter shaped special service tool.

A few other tips I learned.
1. make sure you have a big oil catch pan, I had a 7 qt pan and had to put the bolt back in so it didn't overflow
2. the little plastic tool to drain the filter housing will come with the new filter

toyota filter with either mobil 1 or toyota oil. Sometimes the toyota oil is cheaper from the dealer than mobil.

 

Make it X6 for M1 and Toyota filter.

 

are you guys using that 0w20 mobil eco synthetic? has a green cap. I haven't been able to find any just straight 0w20 synthetic.

I'm not sure. How more eco can M-1 synthetic get?? I just went with M-1 but didn't pay too much attention about the cap. Now I'm curious as to what the diff is.

 

Just a new cap.. And x how ever many we are up too now! I use the trd filter tho.

 

I got a good deal on some factory filters off Craigs 'List. Probably came out to a little over $3 bucks a piece for 8. Never bought a TRD filter but no doubt better than the factory ones, which don't exactly suck.. I used K&N's on my Taco. WIX is supposed to be a decent filter too.

 

What type, size of filter wrench do you need for the filter housing on a 2012 Tundra (non flex fuel) 5.7.

I use Toyota filter and Mobil1 0W-20, Extended Performance.

 

I just purchased a 2012 Tundra CrewMax with 54k miles. The previous owner used extended filters and changed the oil every 10,000 miles. I'm looking for opinions/experience for help in determining if I should continue that frequency or do it more frequently.

 

I have always been a Mobile 1 filter and oil guy. I buy extended life because you get another 8k miles between changes for the same price. I dont know anything about Toyota filters. My truck is new so the dealer is paying for the next 2 years of service

My question to you Toyota veterans is what is so good about the Toyota filter? I'm curious because if its better than Mobile 1 I will be willing to switch.

 

I don't know if it is the same for toyota, but i started using factory filters back when I had my 6 liter powerstroke. Heard a ton of horror stories of filters degrading and being sucked into the engine and messing shit up. However, the motor-craft filters stood up and never had a problem. Plus the price isn't that big of a difference, so I just use factory filters. I'm sure somebody will chime in about filtering allowance too, how many microns it filters.

 

I'm in the same boat as Joshua, coming up to my first oil change. The Baldwin oil filter was recommended to me (25 years ago) by a drag boat racer. They are the number one choice in the trucking industry. I used them in my Taco and 7.3 diesel. I believe these are not better than the TRD but better than the Toyota regular filter. I plan on using the Baldwin with M1 0w20 every 5 thousand miles. Part number P7406.

 

Someone explain the difference between Toyota OEM and Fram oil filters because I am unable to find any. Thanks

 

All I can tell you that my son in law bought the cheapest Fran (canister type not a Tundra type) and it didn't have a one way valve in it. Meaning that each time the engine was turned off the oil would drain out of the engine. Making every start with no oil in the engine until it was pumped up from the pan. I believe that most people view the Fran as a inferior filter to the OEM. The filter only cost around $5 so it makes sense with the large investment you have in your truck. This is just my suggestion.

 

In my Tacoma I went with Toyota Filter (mostly due to the comparison video mentioned^) and Mobil 1 synthetic.

Quick question: should I be using Mobil 1 synthetic with my FFV engine?

 

Amsoil Signature Series full synth, and Amsoil filter. Otherwise, ANYthing but Fram if you care about your engine.

 

I just purchased my 2014 tundra and am going to follow this mans advice on oil changes. Quite a few of members are using this combo.

Mike, do you use the green bottle high fuel mileage or the gold bottle? Both are full synthetic.

 

Your manual trumps any anecdotes we might offer. That said, I use the Toyota filter and Mobile 1, and change the oil every 10k miles or 1 year, whichever happens first.

 

I use the silver bottle on all my engines miles is nothing but a number to the oil.

Some of the newer engines you need to run the green bottle.

Always follow the manual for your temperature on cold starts where you live.
