So how bad is this?

Not that I make a habit out of it, but sometimes I forget to look at my gas gauge and this is what happens. Is it bad to let it get this low?

 

Generally speaking? Yes. Your fuel pump is cooled by the fuel ... no fuel = hotter pump = shorter life span. That aside, you're more prone to pick up any sediment that may have accumulated at the bottom of the tank. Filling up 1/4 tank or above is generally good practice.

 

Just keep driving no worries.

 

Filler' up and subtract that from 38....bet you still had plenty in the tank.

I let my 2nd gen get down to 0 DTE miles yesterday. It only took 21 gallons to fill it up. So with a 26 gallon tank, I still had 5 gallons remaining. @14.7 MPG, I still had ~70 miles on board. It seems Toyota's gage is very conservative, possibly to keep the pump cool as was mentioned.

Ya, thank goodness I was near a gas station. I have NEVER ran out of gas as an adult, and I always think "how stupid can you be " when i hear of other people doing it. That being said, i live 6 mins from my work and w/the 38 gallon gas tank I can go a couple weeks without filling up unless i take a longer trip (as i did in this case). I literally just forget to look at my gauge until the light comes on....

I’ve driven over 50 miles after it hit 0 with absolutely no issues. Only filled up 33 gal so I could’ve gone another 50.

I went about 50 miles past "0" today, just to see how far I could make it if needed. Only took 35 gallons to re-fill, so I probably had another 30miles or so I could have driven.

 

I didn't want my fuel pump to burn up.

 

Ive had mine 0 all the time. And had the biggest fill up for 35.5 gallons. I use my miles due to the lift and wheels.

It was just a test to gauge what I could do in an emergency situation. Also, much of a pump's cooling comes from the transfer of heat to the medium that is passing through it. Plus, every time I stopped/started, I'm sure that the remaining fuel sloshed around a bit and came in contact with the pump externals.

 

I pretty sure Toyota's Distance to Empty is based on a fully loaded or hauling truck. MPG will drop significantly in some conditions, road elevations or towing a big boat (10k towing capacity)

Hey guys I just looked up what the cost of a fuel pump replacement would be ' this is copy and paste from the web. "The average cost for a Toyota Tundra Fuel Pump Replacement is between $532 and $976. Labor costs are estimated between $193 and $245 while parts are priced between $339 and $731. Estimate does not include taxes and fees. I was curious. I had a dodge once with a broken fuel gauge. I ran out of gas and toasted the fuel pump. It cost me 600 bucks and that was a while ago. I would fill up when the light comes on, if not before.
