Why did you buy your truck?

You can't say, because I wanted it. What I want to know is what one thing made you say, ok, this is happening, I'm buying this truck!! For me with my 1st gen, it was the fact that the back cab glass rolls down. I thought, and still think, it's the coolest feature.

 

I wanted a new truck and the 3rd gen Tacomas were a huge let down to me. I didn't know I wanted a full size til I got this. A few weeks before I bought it I rode around in my buddies 16 limited and I was sold on the tundra.

 

The new Tacoma let me down too. I'm not impressed, plus I work on Toyota's for a living. So, being on the end that has to replace crap because it is crap, is annoying. There was NOTHING wrong with the 4.0ltr. This new 3.5ltr direct injection engine blows.

 

Always wanted a truck, and this fit the bill. Test drove it, signed the paperwork of took it home

 

I agree. I may have got one if it had the 4.0, but in the end, for the money I got way more out of my platinum tundra

 

Fell in love with all my uncle's little single cab 4WD Toyota's, I wanted one when I was a kid, inherited my uncle's 89 XtraCab 4WD loved that truck! Then bought my '97 T100 still have 300+ miles still purring, bought me a 3rd gen '13 kept for a brief moment cause I fell in love with the '14+

 

I wanted something bigger. My 08 tacoma was starting to feel cramped. If just normal around town driving it was great, but the minute we wanted to do stuff and take gear it got full quick with GF, her son, 2 dogs and our stuff. Started researching the tundra because I liked the looks of the tundra and I have only owned one none Toyota vehicle.

 

I bought mine because I got tired of the big three. After researching and realizing the resale value, I opted for a brand new truck for the first time in my life. To be honest I only looked at Toyota to humor my half Japanese wife. I knew Toyota was reliable and I owned them in the past. My wife drives an XB. So I went down to the Toyota dealer and they only had two tundras left on the lot. A crew Max and a double cab. They just so happen to be freaking beautiful. It wasn’t even a color I wanted until I saw it sitting there. So I went ahead and pissed off all my friends and bought what I know it’s a better vehicle than theirs. And I think I got a lot of truck for my money. I checked bluebook and I’ve only lost about $3000 in over three years of ownership and resale value.

I am still very happy with my decision. I loved all my other trucks and cars but I always felt like an ass that threw his money away noticing how much they depreciate. And I always felt like once the warranty was up I need to start thinking of getting rid of it.

I do miss my O2 RCSB manual transmission 4.7 L dodge. That was a fun truck to drive. But I can borrow it whenever I want because I gave it to my mom. She was having financial issues and needed a reliable car. It’s still going strong As I took good care of it. But I will say they did have to replace the clutch rebuild the rear end for the second time as I did it the first. New radiator and various sensors. And the damn tail lights are burning up bulbs constantly as they always have.

My mom is rolling around in a truck with two chamber Flowmaster JBA stainless headers, 411 gears with a posi, larger throttlebody and intake as well as tuned. She gets people trying to race her all the time LOL.

 

Sort of a long story, but here goes:

I grew up a Ford truck guy. First vehicle was a 1976 Ford 1/2 ton with a 390. Loved that truck. After that, I had a 1979 Ford 1/2 ton with a 400. Also loved that truck. Then I had a stint with a 2002 Dodge 2500 with a V10. Loved that truck, but it was in the shop for warranty work way too often. Had a nasty highway vibration that took months to figure out. About that same time I got married and started a family. I sold the Dodge to get my wife a 2005 4Runner Sport. That was the best damn vehicle I have ever owned. Hands down. Gave me no problems ever. We had that for about 9 years, and I drove a POS honda accord back and forth to work. During that time, we didn't have a pickup truck......and it sucked. So, I finally decided that I had to have a truck again. I bought a used 2000 Ford F350 with the 7.3 powerstroke. I really liked that truck, but I had to work on it quite a bit. Between that and my '69 Bronco project, I was in the garage wrenching quite a bit. I reached a point where I grew tired of it, and decided to sell the Bronco and the Ford and go buy a brand new truck so I wouldn't have to spend my free time wrenching.

Based on the experience with the 4Runner, I decided to look at the Tundras. The 2nd Gens were finally a true full size truck, and I liked the size of the cab in the Crew Max. It was powerful, rode well, and was fairly maneuverable for it's size. However, the bed size and payload kind of sucked. Also, I didn't really like how the trucks looked. I mean, they looked OK, but they were not my favorite. However, based on how awesome that 4Runner was, I decided to go for it.

The Tundra has been ok. It hasn't given me the reliability that I was expecting from it. I have had several issues with it. Although, the last 25,000 miles have been pretty much trouble free. Now I am sort of at a crossroads - I am not sure if I am going to keep the truck. The payload factor sucks, and it still isn't what I consider to be the best looking truck. It looks better now with the lift and wheels and tires, but it still isn't my favorite. But, I am not sure I want to go down the rabbit hole of buying another domestic.

And just to throw more stuff into the mix - I have been sort of itching to get out and wrench on another project. so I might get another old project truck. Then again, maybe not. Pretty sure the wife would leave if I did that.

 

My family out grew the Tacoma and I have a small penis and needed to compensate. And the Tundras are BA!

I needed a full size truck to tow my Race Car and family around, and I wanted to buy something that I knew would last for many years to come. I considered an F-150 because 3 of 5 salesman at work have driven them for years with very few to no issues, all ecoboost, but I wanted the simplicity of a straight V8. I knew I didn't want the added repair costs of turbos 10 years down the line.

I always knew the Tundra was a reliable truck, and when I really got into doing research on all full size trucks, I knew I had to get a Tundra. It is literally all the things I want and need, and none of the crap I don't.

I don't regret buying this truck one bit.

 

My 06 still blue books over 10k. That impressed me when I looked it up.

 

They're simple. People bitch about low tech this and that, you're buying a truck!!!! Wtf else do you need?? It's built to move/tow/haul things!!!!

 

I had a Tacoma, but it was sitting in the driveway since I had a company vehicle (Ford Explorer) that I used for commuting and going to construction sites. I changed jobs in January, which meant giving the Explorer back (yeah!). The new company gives me the choice of a company vehicle (Chevy truck) or a vehicle allowance and I can buy my own truck. I could have kept the Tacoma since it was paid for and low mileage, but if the company pays for the new truck, why not! The allowance covers the whole payment, with even a little left to cover insurance and small mods.

 

Seems like a no brainier there. Why did you decide on new tundra as opposed to another Tacoma?

My old Tacoma was of legal voting age when I traded it in.

The new Tacomas were having a LOT of problems and the Tundra didn't cost that much more.

I'm 6'2", so having a lot of leg room was mandatory. I had to have the seat all the way back in my old Taco' and it wasn't enough.

I'd been going down to Baja for racing with my buddy in his many different trucks so it was time to "pay back" and you have to have a fullsize truck for the races.


Can't fit this in a Tacoma bed...

 

Pretty simple - I want a powerful v8 that's reliable and can haul stuff when I want to. As for going for the Inferno - it was what they had on the lot so I got the best deal on it, if it wasn't for that I may have made the mistake of getting a MGM , or even worse a white one

exactly! I didn't buy it for any bells or whistles, because in 10 years, when all those bells and whistles start to break down, you're really in for some pain.

I love the fact that it's still built like a truck should be. Even with the lower than average MPG, I'm happy. If I want to save gas, I'll drive my beater focus.

 

I'd ALWAYS wanted an 06 double cab. For years!! It fell into my lap. But, that damn rear window sold it. That was it for me.

 

The ‘87 Toy p/u wasn’t capable of towing a 12’ trailer loaded with tools. The V8 2002 Tundra was more than capable and I really liked the size as it is still not full sized and able to fit in tight spots, but big enough to do the job. Plenty of room inside for me being a bigger guy. Also the tax code at the time of purchase was highly advantageous (Sec. 179). While the code has changed over the years, it is once again highly advantageous for business owners.

 

Mainly because i kick myself for getting rid of an '08 CrewMax. I purchased that one when the economy was down for about $25k. Year after year, i kept checking what it booked at. The value changed very slightly. $4/gallon made the values drop but once the economy rebounded, the value just didn't move. For some reason, i wanted an Avalanche "pickup". It turned out to be a POS with multiple trans failures. I tried out the other brands. I was never too satisfied with the other pickups until i came back to my current vehicle, a 2017 Tundra.

 

For the last ~7 years I was driving an FJ Cruiser and was ready for a change. The first one was more geared towards rock crawling before it , and the second was a fantastic "do it all" ride. It could go fast, go slow, go anywhere... all very comfortably. The big complaint was space. I could take maybe one friend, my dog, and we'd be overloaded. I don't drive people around often, but wanted the ability to go somewhere with friends and have the plenty of space.

At first I wasn't sure if I wanted the Double Cab or Crew Max. The DC was a huge improvement on space over my FJ Cruiser. I test drove a few and they felt great. Pricing and options didn't work out so I moved on. On Craigslist I found a used CrewMax with a little bit too much chrome. It was a good deal so I decided to look at it. As soon as I drove the truck and saw how much space was inside I knew I had to buy it. Plenty of power and plenty of space. 12/13/17 I drove it home.

All of that space came in handy when I moved from San Diego to Denver 2 months later. My dog is super happy about all of the back seat room. The FJ back seat is like a bathtub and the CrewMax is like a swimming pool. It's been a great truck and is slowly becoming as cool as my FJ was. It'll get there

 

There was one on the lot when I bought mine. If I could have had that color grow on me I could have gotten a steal. Just can't seem to like that color. Obviously no one else could or they wouldn't have been offering it for so much less than the rest of the Tundras.

 

Had a Taco..not bad but wanted a real truck with a 6.5 foot bed
