Kayak Rack

We took the kayak's out on the Chattahoochee this weekend. This is the new setup, I picked up the rack and cradles from Amazon:

I gotta say, it was definitely a two beer job getting the boats up there.

 

Thread bump. Just wondering how this is working out for you? Any cons to this set up? Or tips/tricks? I think I'll be going this route instead of spending $700 on the thule. Great find and thanks for posting.

 

Curious if this would work on my 2018 Tundra Crew Max? Same clamps and all?

 

I'd never be able to get mine up there. For the short distances I travel with mine, I'll stick to hanging it off the back of the bed and strapping it down

 

Doubt you’ll get much of an answer guys, the post is 2 years old and the OP only has 3 posts.

 

Ended up tryjng this with different style clamps and they did not work. Going to return them. The rack also sits really high above the cab when i didnt the initial test fit. The clamps he listed look to be more adjustable then the ones i purchased.
Ended up just purchasing the Thule Xsporter.

Just dont get these they wont fit properly.

For the height impaired or solo paddler, the thule hullavator is a nice unit. Awkward at first, but possible to get the hang of after a couple of tries. No pics of it yet on the tundra. I’m sure it’ll mount fine on a bed rack.

Yakima has a similar unit now too, if that’s more your flavor.

 

Yeah, I have a bumper pull camper I recently purchased and want to be able to take the yaks for my wife and I. Thanks for the responses, everyone!

I have the Thule racks for my kayaks. I’ve had them on three different tundras and they have lasted and done a great job. The initial cost is more but they do last, very versatile and easy to use.

 

Looks good but what a PIA to get those up there. I had an exterra before the tundra and hated getting to yak up there. It's nice to have space in the bed for other stuff but I love being able to just slide the yak in and go.

 

I think having a truck bed it’s not bad at all to load them. Pending the weight of your kayaks. The back of the Thule kayak holders are felt so the kayak slides across them and the front holders are rubber to grip the kayak. Once their loaded on you tie the straps while standing in the bed of the truck.

 

Dang. I spent a couple of hours last night trying to figure how to best carry the 13 foot kayak I bought a while ago. I like keeping it lower since it's easier to get out. Might just get a bed extender or create some kind of platform so I can store stuff underneath

 

Here’s how I do it for the 5 minute drive to the lake

 

How long is that kayak? I got a 25 minute drive to the lake.

 

It's 11' (Jackson Coosa). I also take it to my cabin like this...about a 1.25 hour drive. It doesn't stick out to the side any further than my mirrors.

 

Couldn't you lower the tailgate and X tie it down too? Or I have seen some yak trailers as well. Basically looked like they have bicycle tires on them.

 

Ended up making my own bed extender. It was also my first welding project. I painted it black. Going to put some reflective tape on it and come up with some tie downs.

Thinking of running some superstrut on the inside and making tie downs that I can adjust for different widths.
