I have king shocks front and rear. The rear shafts have a pretty good amount of chips and pitting over time, and since winter the chips are basically rust spots, which I polish out so I dont ruin the seals as best I can. It that the technique most of you guys do? Any other tricks to get them nice and smooth? Pretty hard material to work with.

Preventing the pits is your better option. I have used plastic, zip tied to the shock body.

A new shock shaft is ~65.00.

A very fine wet/dry sand paper with lots of water will help with the chipped chrome on the shaft. Problem is when the chrome get chipped it tends to peel up and not break away. When it peels up, albeit it a very small piece, that when it'll cut the seal. Any kind of boot like those mentioned will help.
