So The Fast Lane Truck (a decent review group from CO) just tested the new Ford Diesel. . . and you can guess what happened:

Well, kinda deceiving. They went into limp mode on the downhill portion, not home.

Uphill was slow as a turtle....by a lot.

Only saving grace is the 5.4 mpg.

I’d also like to point out the 68k dollar price tag, and did anyone notice the payload capacity? 1350 lbs is what I remember...or close to it.

I’ll be doing the same trip tomorrow and Monday.

Oh I have gone over it several times Ron. Left lane, cruise control on, rocking out.

    Oh, no limp mode. Lmao.

As I recall the Tundra did fairly decent a few years back on the same Gauntlet Test Run.

I did do that trip in a Tundra, several times. Camper wasn’t bad, Jeep was horrible (Jeep and flatbed are heavier). I’ve actually done every difficult pass in Colorado with at least 7500 lbs in tow in a second gen Tundra.

I’m not on here just because it’s a cool place to be (great benefit) and have some people I call friends on here (yet another great benefit), the Tundra can work and for a weekend warrior is a perfect platform to buy.

    Reliable

    Powerful

Decent fuel economy towing, yes, the EB sucks down the fuel.

Great feel when driving and in the cabin.

I’m a Toyota enthusiast, just like you guys. Tundra comes out in a more HD platform, my DM is gone.

After watching this I found and rewatched the 2016 Pro run of the same test.
Tundra made it up about a minute and a half faster, ran 60mph the whole way, got a bit less than 3mpg and cost $20,000.00 less!
I will gladly keep my Tundra with its antiquated features, dated engine, and primitive refinements!
Kind of like the big knobs and simple controls. Guess I’m a simple person.

As I recall their test of the tundra required them to lift the throttle on the uphill test in order not to exceed 60 miles an hour. What a stupid test.

Man that doesn't look good for Ford having that issue, granted its early in production but jeez do manufacturers not test this stuff? Seriously, I would hate to be in that situation and go into limp mode.

These smaller diesels I think I will gladly take lower mpg and have power on tap then the 2mpg better they are getting and no power left. That cab was really quiet though at 63db, I think the Tundra was one of the worst at that but maybe Toyota knows we like to hear that v8 sing.

I cant wait to see what Toyota comes up with for the next Tundra, I wish they would feed us some kind of info on what to expect.

So ... it’s not reliable, 68k, parts are more. Why would someone want this again?

Oh wait mpg ... right. But it’s expensive, plus def fluid and diesel fuel here cost more than gas. Plus it may not always work.

Hmmmm what a great deal. I think I’ll take 2. NOT!

If the test is so see how quick the truck can make it to the summit, then keep your foot in it and let it run.

One of the comparisons that the video shows is the amount of time from start until the truck reaches the summit. But it seems to me for a legitimate comparison you need to keep your foot in it and let the truck run to see which one actually makes it quicker.

The point of their channel is to see how the trucks perform and if they can make it up the summit at the benchmark time (which is the time it would take if you did speed limit the entire time). A slow time means the truck was not able to maintain speed limit the entire run

It isn't the first time they test drove a new Ford and let them down. Apparently a Super Duty failed on them as well. There was another one but i don't recall the details. At least they don't cover up any issues unlike some of the other biased ones out there.

What I take away from this, is everyone is waiting for Toyota to come out with some type of small diesel. This is exactly what Toyota would not want to happen on their test run. Which is why I prefer driving a tried and true platform instead of the latest and greatest boat anchor. How could you ever trust that truck? Issues are just too common with any of these small diesels in big trucks. Same thing with the Ford Ego Douche. If Ford and Chevy and Dodge would just do more testing and work the bugs out of their platforms instead of swapping to new drivetrains before mastering the previous version, they could gain some reputation back from me.

I will say I was surprised that these ford fanboys actually released the footage of this. I would figure that they would've gotten everything dialed in and re-shot this. Good for them on being honest.

I know it may look like I am a big three hater. This is not the case, I’m just severely disappointed in everything they do lately. I would like to see them all change their tune and make something we could all be proud of as an “American car company”.

I for one was a supporter of any of the big three at one point or another. Thought I had the latest and greatest trucks. They all let me down in one way or another. Which can happen to any vehicle but the fact is what happened to me was just way too common and never addressed. My 97 F150 V6, the bearings went out at 68,000 miles. My Dodge ram which for the most part was good truck. Has had two rearends go out in the last 120,000 miles. My mom is still driving it to this day. I attribute it’s reliability to the 4.7 L V-8 and manual transmission being stout. My Chevy trailblazer SS was giving me gold metal shavings in the oil filter at around 80,000 miles. This is an LS2 6 L. It was common for the bearings to start giving way. Disappointing.

I took very good care of each and every one of those vehicles. I also did not beat on them that hard. I was considering a Dodge before my Toyota but was not impressed with what they have to offer on the lot for the price. Toyota just made sense.

Agree with this, when you start putting these small motors in bigger trucks reliability is bound to go down. The smaller engines diesel or turbo just have to work much harder then a large v8. I hope Toyota keeps a straight up v8 in the next gen Tundra.

What were they doing? 4 or 5K on a downhill. That seems like a lot for a little diesel engine spinning like that. Couldn’t keep that trailer at 60 mph going uphill either. No guts on the top end. I definitely wouldn’t want that truck for towing anything above 4k.

Yeah that thing was spinning good on the downhill, I wonder why the Ford and dodge diesels in the 1500's don't utilize and exhaust brake like Chevy did with the Dmax Colorado.
