I took mine to the dealer today and they are replacing the ecm. Apparently Toyota tech has a new installation method for this and they know about it. Problem is the part is a week out. Limited supply in the US.

I'm not sure what could be changed about the installation. There is a cutout in the firewall with 4x threaded holes. The ECM has a gasket around it.

Yeah not really sure. This is coming with direction from Toyota, so it seems like a known issue.

Its the casing around the ECM that is rattling. The thin metal housing on one side is whats creating that tinney sounding buzz.

The ECM Harness from from the engine is affixed too firmly, so any engine vibrations transfer straight to the firewall and the ECM is right next to that point.

Undo the harness to the bracket on the firewall (in the engine bay side) and wire tie it instead. Sound will go away but it is a band aide fix. Do let us know how or what Toyota did to fix it. I've seen some dealers just wrap rubber materials around the ECM and others did what I did with the zip tie / harness. But now that they're seeing more and more of it, maybe they have a new housing for the ECM?

For me, I went a little over zealous and made a thin rubber base for the harness bracket with some rubber washers for the 3 nuts that hold it down to help dissipate vibration to the firewall. That took out 80% of the sound. I then took a radiator hose, few inches longer the ECM, slit it down end to end, and "c" clamped to the edge of the ECM under the dash. Stays in place. No more buzz or rattle.

But man, it drove me nuts before I found out it was that. Do get back to us on what Toyota did and of there's a TSB for it.

I just dropped off my truck at the dealership. Tech said he drove 2 other trucks on the lot and they had the same noise or worse than mine. He is installing a new ECM per Toyota's direction and also trying to sound deaden if possible. He says the noise is internal to the ECM and Toyota is well aware of it. I would expect a TSB soon on this as it sounds like a common issue. I'll report when i get it back from the dealer.

So I just got back from dealer and with new ecm installed noise still there....not surprised. The technician somehow used wheel weight lead and fixed it to the ecm and noise gone. He said he thinks the noise is in the gap between the metal pieces. He is sending his findings and said they will have a fix or bulletin soon. Not sure if I will be back for an updated ecm in the future.....my guess is yes. My dealership is awesome to work with and will go above and beyond to make customers happy.

I'm actually dealing with 2 sounds in my Tundra right now. One is a sort of plastic clicking sound on the drivers dash that sounds almost near the window that I've had no luck with. The other however with the findings from this thread I think issemi-related to the ECM. The harness in the engine bay will occasionally press against the plastic cover to all the wiring behind the airbox causing sort of a low popcorn sound usually when applying the brakes or sitting on a slight incline forward. I haven't been able to reproduce it after I put a little tape on to test it, but tomorrow morning when it's colder I hope to confirm it's fixed. The tapping one bothers me so much more though because it's a lot more noticeable while driving, almost like something right behind the dash at the windshield.

I took it in, dealer couldn't hear. I took the tech for a ride, the noise disappeared. Lol

I've got a ride along scheduled coming up, gonna see if I can't find a good road to take them down. They "checked" last time I was at the dealership and couldn't find anything.

Looking foward to seeing that the solution for that. But wheel weights huh? Hmm pretty good idea. Let me guess, he placed them on the right side?

Bought s new 2018 Tundra CM. Had same issue......took back to dealer. Toyota actually had service notice on the ECM. They swapped it from another new Tundra on the lot and it was gone. I do have a slight buzz vibration in my gas pedal though. Lots of posts on that. What’s up with that ????

To get up in there how did you remove the plastic in the glove box? I have same issue with the rattling and its driving me loco. Afraid of breaking something.

You can remove the plastic piece under the glove box and get to the ECM

2018. 167 Miles. TRD Exhaust... and I have the buzz under load at about 2K RPM. I just put sound deadener on both sides (used @Vendeta2k idea) while under the dash. Took it up the drive way...buzz again. Opened hood and put a little more torque on the 4x 10mm screws (they were not exactly tight). Again...got a buzz noise. The wife has already had a few glasses of wine so she doesn't want to drive it while I put my head under the dash. Just started happening last night and now that I'm listening for it...I hear it every time I put the right pedal down. Only for a short RPM range little under 2k and past it. But that's like all the time with stop-n-go traffic. I have a C-clamp... I might just try that to see if it works. If it does, I may take it back to the dealer (might do that anyways...).

Removed the harness in the engine bay from the firewall clamp. That took a lot of stress off the connector into the ecm. Unfortunately, still buzzes. If I tap the ecm from inside I can hear a faint rattle (not sure of the word to use...just that it's not a solid thud when I tap). Only happens when tapping bottom driver side corner that is closest to you. When tapping higher up or on the passenger side I get a nice thud sound. I need to get under there while someone else is driving. Will have to wait until son gets home cause wife just said "not happening..." (true on many different levels).

I know some have taken it back to the dealer and I’ve heard there is a tsb for ECM replacement...thinking about taking mine in just for piece of mind even though a healthy coating of sound deadener fixed mine

Fixed. Well about 85% of it. It's absolutely the ECM module. After doing this in home depot's parking lot the buzz is nearly gone. I also tried a small spring clamp but it didn't put enough pressure to eliminate the buzz. I'll work on it tomorrow to try and get 100% by moving it around to different places. Definitely a bush fix. I remember back in the 80's bulletin boards were only starting to be popular with the mighty modem. Today these forums are truly a blessing for many reasons...it's nice to know someone else has the same problem and likely the fix... Thanks to @Vendeta2k for the sound deadening tip and @Stuffs for the C clamp idea. Now I'm just thinking is it worth the trip to the dealer to get another ECM (4 hours round trip) that might do the same thing.

Anyways... thanks for all the posts. Extremely helpful. I'm going to join the wife and have some wine tonight.

Unfortunately, my C clamp came loose and buzzing came back. I re-adjusted last night when I got home and left a message for my dealer. Will be calling him today to get this replaced. I captured the sound here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/JxiTAdHhazQkOCIr2

And sorry... I've never uploaded video before this was the easiest method.

It's a 4 hour round trip to the dealer for me so I need to make sure they have one there before making the trek. Love the truck so far. Once I get the buzzing squared away I can see this one staying in the driveway a longer time than my normal.

    Update...

Spoke with the service manager this morning. He confirmed with the Toyota field rep that they know of the buzzing issues with late model 17's and early 18's. It's not a TSB...but it is known issue in the field. Toyota field person told the service manager to order a new ECM for my truck. Hoping to get it sometime this week.

Went to dealership this morning to get ECM replaced. I took the tech for a test drive to show him the buzzing. Of course the buzzing was less than before (I removed the C clamp) but still there. Not like in my earlier post with the sound clip...but close.

After about an hour he came to speak with me. He removed my ECM and tapping the bottom corner he could hear a rattle. Problem was on the new ECM he could hear the same rattle. He tried to open it, but the internals are sealed and he didn’t want to break the seal. He told me Toyota will come out with a fix... but my bush fix with the C clamp was likely a good fix. The fix he came up with was a large banjo clamp with some foam. That puts more pressure over a larger area than my C clamp.

Didn’t hear any buzzing on ride home. Not sure I like the fix....but until a TSB comes out or a replacement part...not much else I can do. He was skeptical until he removed mine and tapped on it. When he produced the same sound on the new one he understood I wasn’t crazy or over reacting.

I will put some more sound deadening on it as well.

I had a similar issue with my previous truck (2016 Tacoma). Drove me absolutely insane. Turned out it was a bundle of wires under the glove box. I took a couple zip ties and tightened the bundle up, and the buzzing stopped.

Does the ECM get warm? I'd assume that the casing is metal for heat dissipation, wrapping it with anything would hamper that ability, which in turn could void the warranty/damage the ECM.

    Thoughts?

Dealer receptionist kept calling. Finally took it in for ECM reprogramming recall. While there, had tech drive with me and acknowledge the ECM rattle while under throttle. Again, have TRD exhaust. Anyways, dealer wrapped the ECM in some sort of Toyota approved sound deading wrap. So far, so good. About 500 mi later and as good as I can ask for.

Took mine in and mentioned the ECM. Drove around the tech because last time I had service done they said they couldn't hear it. This time they came back with the sound is coming from the air injectors. Said there wasn't anything they could do about it.
