Things I don't understand......

I have been a forum junkie for a while now. It all started when I did a frame up resto-mod on a '69 Bronco. I spent hours and hours on the forums researching things, talking, and planning. I am on forums for a lot of my hobbies now, and I enjoy watching different discussions unfold. I thought I would start another discussion related to "sh$t I don't understand".

1. People that drive slower than the speed limit. I mean really - do you feel that you are more important than all of the people behind you? You are holding us up - GTF out of the way.

2. People that buy mods for their vehicles without knowing what the mods are or what they do - they just want to "mod" their vehicle. Why do this? I have seen several examples of this. "Hey, Joe just put a flux capacitor on his rig - I better get one too"

3. People that create "build logs" for their vehicles - when they don't build anything. They just slap extra stuff on their rig (or usually pay someone else to slap the stuff on their rig for them). This seems to happen more on newer vehicle forums - the old ones are usually chock full of people fabbing stuff up for their "builds".

4. Leather in trucks. Well, really leather in all vehicles - but especially in trucks. Never understood this - never will. Actually all of the floofy bells and whistles in trucks. It is stuff like this that turned trucks into $50,000-$70,000 glamour machines. You used to be able to get a good solid truck to do some work for next to nothing - they were the cheap option. No longer. But back to the leather - hot in the summer, cold in the winter, scratches/damages easily - why would you want that in something you use to do some work in? Oh - right - most people don't use their trucks to do work.

5. People that go buy a PRO model and then turn around and mod the crap out of it - replacing suspension and alot of other things.. Why spend the extra money initially on the PRO if you are going to replace everything that makes it a PRO anyway? Is it just the color scheme? I don't understand.

6. People that start threads that might rub some the wrong way. Oh wait - I do understand that one.


Feel free to add things you have trouble understanding.....

 

I can strongly agree with you on #5. Why spend extra money on the PRO, then mod the heck out of it, when you can save yourself a crap ton of money by getting the base and just modding it to be a PRO??

 

but. but. i just did this because all the cool kids are doing it. all i want is to be included. and wanted. and loved.

 

Some of us aren't mechanically inclined, but we want to have a log to trace how our trucks have evolved over time too.

Agree with number 1 but my opinion on all your other points is it is their truck and they can do whatever they want with it. People spending a ton of $$ on mods they will never use is no different than spending 6 figures on an exotic sports car that you would more than likely on a regular basis never get the chance to really open up and drive the way it is intended.

If you have the $$ spend it the way you want

I agree with #4, trucks have started to become the "cool" thing and people who are not even truck people are buying them as like a status thing. My neighbor owns a f250 platinum diesel and never I mean never tows anything, these people buy trucks then complain the ride harsh, don't have enough tech etc. So the manufacturers to get good reviews water them down and add a bunch of tech which in return makes it less of a truck for people who work them. I use mine everyday for work, bed is full of tools and materials..its tough to find a basic truck now adays.

 

Just don't agree on Leather...my kids would destroy cloth.

I had one vehicle that had leather. 2006 Honda Accord that we bought used at a screaming price. Within 2 years of owning it, every seat had some permanent scratch/hole/tear in it. Every vehicle that my immediate family has that has leather has holes in it. Yes, eventually cloth will wear out - but that takes years. My kids are pretty tough on things, but what destroys leather the easiest is my dogs.

 

7. I don’t understand why my tilt/telescoping steering wheel moves how it does. I like to steer with my left knee and I can’t get it to where the top of my knee and steering wheel normally meet.

Steering wheel should tilt kinda pivoting at the base area instead of the arm under dash.

1) There isn't always a passing lane.
2) Not sure why I care - I just don't understand it - makes no sense to me. I'm sure people look at some of the things that I buy and think that it is stupid as well.
3) Semantics I guess. Not a big deal - just bugs me. I don't consider buying a lift kit and slapping it on my truck any form of "building". I especially don't consider it building if I pay someone else to do it. Fab my own bumper? Yep. Fab my own rock sliders? Yep. Make my own bracket to fit a canned-ham style power steering pump on a vehicle that never had power steering? Yep. In the end, I still appreciate all of the logs - they are a great source for ideas. And no, I didn't completely build my own house. Not that it really matters, we did just go through about a year long gut and remodel. I did quite a chunk of that work myself.
4) If you look at the price difference between cars and trucks in 1980 and the price difference now - the gap now is huge. It never used to be that way, because trucks were for the most part considered basic work vehicles.
6) If I get one - I will enjoy it.

I knew this would get some people riled up. It's half the reason I posted it. Always good entertainment. Plus, I really do like hearing people's opinions on things that don't make sense to me.

 

I don't have anything against modding vehicles. Not at all. I have modded every single truck that I have ever owned. But, I knew what the mods were for. That is what I don't understand - people just slapping mods on their truck for the sake of saying that they did it. While they don't really have any idea what it was that they just did to their truck.

 

I consider my self a rule breaker after reading this post.

1. I have leather.
2. I have lots of gadgets in my truck
3. I love to mod, mod, mod and oh yes mod some more.

I do know what my mods are for and I do like to install them myself though. I can agree with slow drivers and modifying a PRO to a lifted Tundra.
