I HATE that chrome around the cup holders. It always catches the sun and shines it into my eyes. One of these days I'm gonna swerve blindly into a tree lol. Glad to know there's something that can be done about it. Not sure why they didn't just do it in that silver color they used around the gear shifter. That's not nearly as reflective.

What is involved in Plasti dipping the trim piece around the cup holders? Prep, cleaning, which paint, etc....

    Thanks

I actually stripped the chrome off, what a PITA. Then I just sprayed clear over the black plastic.

I did this and it is by far the best possible and cheapest mod ever. OP, just get a plastic pry tool, you should have one anyways being a Tundra owner. It comes right off. A couple layers of PlastiDip and you're good to go.

If that stuff works as easy as the video, I’m going to need a whole lot of this stuff.

on the iH8Mud forum, some of the guys just brought the chrome plated parts (old Toyota Grilles and stuff) to a chromeplating shop and they completely removed it for them in minutes. Cost them anywhere from $3 to $20.

I noticed something in this morning’s darkness before work, it’s a hard target to miss because the holders are large but the chrome provides nice contrast for my peripheral vision when putting my coffee mug back and forth in dim light. I’m going to test this theory with some black tape over it for a couple of days before I dip it.

I tried several things. Brake fluid, which can make the plastic brittle. Oven cleaner which seemed to work very slowly. Vinegar which didn't seem to do much. None of them worked quickly, it was an exercise in patience and perseverance.

That might've been part of the problem, I tried vinegar.

I was able to remove the chrome this morning. I used a sandblaster with the smallest medium available to take it off. Not an easy process b/c its actually metal chrome on plastic. You can see in some of the pics the copper getting exposed. It also seemed to warp the plastic a little, so I took a heat gun to get it back close to normal. Next step will be to prime then hydro dip and clear coat.

its pretty easy to remove, as stated above. I may be able to find any old pic, but I did the same and sprayed mine with rattle can. I will say this, im pretty wreckless with my yeti, so mine is starting to ship a little bit, a vinyl wrap may go a little further. OR like @HornFrog did, remove the chrome for a better base.

Makes a big difference though, then you'll just have to cover those pesky chrome AC vents to match (sorry everyone, go look again if you haven't)

Thanks for the complement. It was the first time I tried the hydro dip.
I replaced the cup holder trim with a new one and plastidipped it. It never really fit correctly after removing the chrome and my OCD had enough of it.
The hydro dip around the shifter has held up really well. I just recently noticed the paint underneath starting to fade a little bit, otherwise it still looks good.

Did you hydrodip over the chrome on the new trim piece?

No, I just used black plastidip. The picture with both is old. I only have the hydro dip around the shifter now.

Has anyone color matched it to the silver around the gear shift area? I think that would look really good. But not if it isn't a close match.

If you pull the safety data sheet from the Superclean web site, you'll see the ingredients list:

    Section 3 – Composition/Information on Ingredients
Chemical Name, Common Name CAS # Concentration wt/wt(*)
Sodium Metasilicate 6834-92-0 <5 (an emulsifying and suspension agent)
    Sodium hydroxide 1310-73-2 <5
Surfactant, blend Trade secret 1-10 (lowers surface tension)

So you're soaking the part in Lye to dissolve what is likely an Aluminium coating, instead of actual chrome, deposited by vacuum metallization.

I just picked up a bottle at Ace Hardware, and I intend on trying it on the "chrome" side mirror cover I replaced with an MGM painted one. I'll likely use a gallon ziplock bag, then rinse the part in a mildly acidic water bath (a bit of white vinegar should do) to neutralize it all.
