2018 Tundra major repair

If 20 days qualifies you for lemon law in your state I would do it immediately. The longer yout wait the less you will get for your truck when you turn it in.

If lemon law isn’t the route, ask for the platinum warranty and first month payment compensation. Similar happened to me on a vehicle, and they provided a warranty, lifetime drivetrain warranty and payment for the month....

 

Pissed definitely. They did their part with replacement. So if it were me I would trade up somewhere else or see if they will work with you. Getting a extended warranty would be the least I would expect frim a good dealer, especially if you have a good history with them.

 

Request a fully transferable warranty. If this doesn't show up in Carfax I wouldn't worry too much much about long term value.

This is a crappy situation, sorry you are dealing with it either way.

 

New Truck first pic next to my tacoma and second picture at the dealer 3 weeks later. I purchased the truck 4 hours away if I had known the extent of the repair I would have went back.

 

I do not! It is an engine that was replaced which doesn't lower the value of the truck. An accident showing on Carfax will lower the value.

 

The engine repair is in the service records. It's reassembled by someone who does not do this everyday dealer and Toyota have said this is very rare. So Im still hoping they will do the right thing. I do not keep my vehicles long 5 yrs maybe? This engine replacement turns off potential buyers and I'm sure if I trade it in at Toyota they check the records and would not give me the full value. You are right if I sell this to a buyer who doesn't know, it wouldn't hurt the value. Why screw another person. Toyota should take responsibility for lack of quality control.

 

Again this happened at 1500 miles it would have been a different story had it been 10k a year later? Lol not 3 weeks after purchase. Something wasn't assembled right? Torqued?. They still don't know why this happen. Thanks again for opinions toyota has 10 more days to render their decision. Haha hopefully they don't troll this sight. If this is as rare as they say it wouldn't be hard to id the vehicle.

Toyota techs receive factory training. Toyota did the right thing by replacing the engine which is all they are required to do.

You say that Toyota has another 10 days to render their decision, obviously you already asked for a remedy you see fit. If I were you I just wait until they do so and see if it satisfies your demands. If not then start complaining (not sure to whom though). At any rate, I hope it works out for you and if you keep your truck a few years nobody even cares if you had an engine replacement under warranty.

Some years ago I bought a Ram diesel truck it had less then 50K miles on it and had the engine replaced at 15K under warranty.....it was a selling point to me. And that was a Cummins engine which probably last twice as long as the Toyota 5.7L on an average.

 

I wouldn’t buy a truck with an engine replaced at that mileage. I’d be thinking, wonder what else went wrong on the assembly line that day.

Anyway, I would work a trade with your dealeron a new one. Hopefully they will help you out given the PIA. Hell, I bought a new War Eagle boat last year and it came with a hole drilled straight through the hull. My first fishing trip at Murrells Inlet, SC and I was running the bilge every 15 minutes. Lol. My dealer ordered me a new boat, patched mine. I got a brand new boat without the hole “feature” and they sold my old one as a used boat.

Bah, just trade it in. I am here on this site now because not 30 days ago I traded in my new 2017 F150 with 7,000 miles on it due to multiple failures (4x4 and both turbos replaced) and luckily got myself a tundra!

 

The engine assembly is a different assembly time and location from the vehicle assembly. I’d take the new engine and ask for platinum warranty. If they exceed the lemon law, I’d ask for a new truck.

then I might have screwed myself, the car fax on my 2013 said accident, front right collision, but there no airbags deployed, frame damage...the title is clear. should i take mine to my mechanic and see if there is any thing noticeable?

 

I didn't, I was unaware till i saw people making comment on it, I even offered to change it but got no response. I have been using this name an avatar for close to a decade.

 

I wouldn't touch the vehicle. I'd move on to the next one.

 

If it drives straight with no abnormal tire wear I wouldn't bother. Of course my truck is also R-titled because it was totaled and repaired, has a brand new frame and all damage repaired and was 5K under KBB so I figured why not.

To the OP, I'm not saying I wouldn't be pissed about a new engine at 1500 miles but shit happens and that's exactly what the warranty is for. If it were me looking into service records at 1500 I would assume a manufacturing problem, short of dumping sand in the oil there's not a whole lot an owner could do to grenade an engine in that short amount of miles. In the end people will nit pick over anything, I've had people complain about rust on a 20 year old truck for $1000 here in NWPA.

@RowdyRon your new avatar is more badass anyway. Best thing, the next time you can upgrade from the M60 to an M1. I had my fair share working on tanks and tracked recovery vehicles.

 

I would talk with the General Sales Manager or GM of the dealership and explain to them in a nice manner that I do not want the truck with the replaced short block. I would explain that other people likely wouldn't be bothered by it, but it really bothers me. I would explain that I'm willing to take a small loss on the transaction and they can sell it to someone else that doesn't care or won't bother looking at the service history (or use it as a dealer vehicle). They can then sell me a new truck at cost to offset the taxes a 2nd time (I'm in a state that would tax both transactions). I would pitch it as a win-win situation in that they get to move another unit to help monthly sales, I will be happy, and they will likely sell the truck with a replaced short block for the same price that they buy it back. I would remind them that I have purchased 3 Toyota's from their dealership (in my case that's true). Having a nice conversation could probably lead to a realistic transaction. For me personally I would determine the most amount I'm willing to lose on the swap for my piece of mind. I'm clearly more anal about this sort of thing than some folks. I'm also the type that looks at all service history on a used vehicle and would never buy a used Tundra that had major engine work done when it was brand new. There are more people like me out there so it clearly lowers the value or makes it take a bit longer to sell.

 

I don't think it will show on the carfax. It will show on toyota owners site though so anyone with the VIN # can pull that info.
back in the days I bought a used mustang from my buddy. Car had 30,000 miles and had a new engine put in at about 1,000 miles. The factory engine didn't have much oil in it so Ford replaced it. I drove the car another 30,000 miles then sold it. the new owner is at around 140,000 miles now.
I think you will be fine. Just keep the truck long enough and try to negotiate an extended warranty from Toyota.

 

I had a similar experience with my 17 Tacoma, although not nearly as bad as an engine failure. I ended up trading it in for my Tundra. As a loyal customer, (6 cars) the dealer gave me a very nice trade in value on the Tacoma and a great price on the Tundra. I skipped the sales department and went straight to the owner, so I had his support. It turned out to work for the best, and I am much happier with the Tundra.
You have some leverage, just be careful not to over do it on the accommodation.

Remaining cool and reasonable will go a long way.

 

My take on this

It’s a man made item. Any thing made by man can and eventually will fail.
Toyota stood behind the product and repaired it at no costs to you.
The repair is covered by the same warranty.
I would drive it and move on.

If you just can’t seen to enjoy the truck then sell it or trade it in.

 

So is this the only 2018 Tundra that has had this problem? Did it have oil in it? Not likely for Toyota to screw up an engine.......but anything is possible. Now taking the cab off to replace the engine, that sounds far fetched..........from someone who has pulled close to 800 engines in there time. Maybe it's that dealership? I'd be pissed to, but I would get to the bottom of it, someone knows something there. On the flip side, you got your new engine covered under warranty, and all is legit form your signature on all that paper work. There is no number matching engines to vehicles anymore......the classic days are over my friend. Even if you have some limited edition whatever, it is not going to matter in the future when you sell it. It's not a Barracuda or a Studebaker. The value of your truck probably dropped $10,000 the day you drove it off the lot.

The only way you will get anything from Toyota is to prove you have a safety issue with the truck. If you didn't pay for a 100k warranty, you're not going to get one for free. Not liking what happened doesn't gain you the freebies that you want. They gave you all the freebies already with the new engine and time. No lemon law applies to a defined problem which may require more time to repair. If it fails two more times, then you qualify for lemon. You best chance for anything is with the dealership. You spent good money with them, and they may be willing to move inventory around to help you, but they have technically done their job too. It sucks, but you probably could drive this truck 200k and not have another issue. Then look back and say, "that wasn't so bad". The new engine is NEW. If there are no other problems... Repair damage, scratches, dents, etc. You have lost nothing in the big picture... Now, you just want more... but how much will it take for you to be ok with this. That's up to you. Good luck.
