Best OBDII Reader Mobile App

Lately I've been experimenting with some of the mobile OBDII reader mobile apps and thought I'd pass on some of my findings.. While most of these offer a way to read codes, I've also been looking for a general monitoring and gauge app.

IMYO, I think that there is a lot of junk out there in the app stores, but basically zeroed in on 2 apps.

1) Torque Pro - This is probably one of the more popular apps out there and for the most part does a fairly decent job. It's only on the Android platform, for the one listed on the iOS app store is NOT the same product. My biggest complaint is that I could not get the transmission temperature to work which was one of my goals.

2) OBD Fusion - This is the one I have settled on and feel does the best job. I use an iPhone, and it has a version in the iOS app store. Best of all, they offer Toyota specific PID files which opens up reading a lot of the sensors included the transmission temp. The gauges can also be highly customized including minimum and maximum points. This one has really grown on me and is now part of my toolkit.

Do you know if anyone makes a splitter for the OBD, I have a Phoenix Tesla head unit that is pluged into it now.

 

Yea, there's tons of them out there. I have not tried any of them yet, but will be using the AMP Research one once I install the Power Steps.

 

Ok , could you post the one you get, im not too familiar with what type plug it is.

 

Be very useful if there was/is a way to connect it to the stock radio head unit to have temps always pulled up instead of using phone evertime

It's a bit pricey in my opinion, but I know AMP is good company. There are many on Amazon that are around $10 (search" "OBD splitter"), but have no idea as to their quality.

BTW, if you use one of these apps, you will need an OBD reader (purchased separately). Each app supports different readers, so pay attention to what reader you will need depending on which app you wish to use.

 

The only way to display this on the stock HU is to wire in a phone mirror setup. I saw where there is a company selling a kit for this, but from what I understand, it converts the signal to analog and the quality of the image on the HU is just not very good.

I have one of those magnetic phone holders on the way that I will mount on the dash next to the HU to hold the phone for easy visual.

 

Ok i did the DIY post for hidden mag and like it, i just added floor anti slip to get a little bettor bite on the phone. Is the signal Bluetooth from the fusion?

 

Yes, the Kiwi Bluetooth adapter gets good reviews:

But I use the ELM327 WIFI adapter which was much cheaper than the Kiwi. Takes a couple of extra seconds for the WIFI adapter to connect, but it does pretty good. I would prefer the bluetooth, but just didn't want to spend the extra $ for it.

With Bluetooth i can use the HU then.
