DIY wheel well liners

Spent a day making up a wheel well liner for the Tundra. Living on dirt roads and the salt i thought a little more protection would be nice. Wrote to Husky and asked why they only make liners for big 3 , there reply was tundras already have a liner. Stock liners don't cover much.

One thing i should have done was removed the emergency brake cable and route it under the leaf spring because of the 2" lift block. That would have prevented so much cut out in the middle.

 

Pretty awesome mod, man. This is giving me some ideas.

 

You can heat and mold this plastic if you have to, i just started to bolt it in place then used a heat gun + propane torch and pretty much formed it self. The drivers side should go much faster.

Will be making a small bracket for center support of liner, there are two holes in frame by the upper stop mount.(yellow) I got my bolts and extuded U nuts from a local auto body supply shop.

Update: did not have to make any center support, the liners are still 2 1/2" to 3" away from tires.

Also when i got the plastic i rolled it out on my heated slab and put a few weights on it for a day made it much easier to work with. The length of plastic i started out with was 54" to be on the safe side

This is slick for a 52 year old, i miss racing.

 

Part 2 the drivers side install.

It took about 2 hrs to install, much quicker then the first.
The stock clips are a pain in the ass to remove epically if you are using bushwacker flairs (clips get distorted from flair screws), what i did is replaced all of them with these clips and bolts, was about $20 from an auto body supply shop.



I cut off a 56" piece and centerd it between the top two mounts. Cliped in place with vise grips. Used a pick to find the mount holes , then drilled the 4 holes out with a 1/4 bit.



Pull the plastic down and install the clips then reinstall plastic and loosely install bolts.
I found it was easier to just use the pick then drill the holes and use a nut and bolt to temporally hold it in place. After all bolts are in place i used a little heat so the plastic would take shape. Make sure you have enough plastic on the lower part of panel for your tire clearance.

Take the unit down, then cut 1/2" away from holes and install clips. Reinstall unit and now and put on back side of framework. Start bolting in place and trim as you go. After it's all trimed and bolted in place you can heat it if needed to take final fourm. Dont forget to trim out for the emergency brake cable and axle, i jacked up the wheel and trimed as i went, make sure you take into consideration of the rubber stop being compressed an inch or two.

Great job and awesome idea. I did something similar years ago on my taco that had a body lift becsuse it looked like crap. This material looks much nicer and useless that the old "gap guards". I may have to buy a roll this summer

Well i have to say I'll give you an "A" for artistic value, but as for protecting the frame and undercarriage from salt and rocks in northern Minnesota i would give it a solid "D". As for the price,,, $150 to $250 thats alot beer.
