One of the cats are failing at 122k I can smell rotten egg consistently. I'm hoping the stealership will fix it under warranty as I've got 3k left on my 125k or 7 year warranty.
If they don't I'll just run it till it either throws a code or gets to loud. I'm surprised it's already failing. Anyone running bad cats with no problems? I really don't want to fall into limp mode or something of the sorts.
    122k 2016 5.7 stock exhaust.

Damn! Grass doesn’t grow under your Tundra with those miles and being a 2016!!!

I would be looking into why your cats are failing.

Spark plugs are due at 120k miles, and assume you have done that right? I would look into this first. Cheapest fix, but once your catalytic converters go bad......

Piston rings, valve guides, or other engine components that are damaged can also cause this problem. Since it is a Toyota, I’m going with spark plugs first, and a likely cause.

Sometimes it sits for a couple hours when I'm sleeping. Lol

I'll have to check the spark plugs I didn't even think of that. I did them at a 100k so I don't think it could be that. There's absolutely no change in the actual function of the truck it doesn't drive differently there's no lack of power nothing odd no weird sounds. I would notice a weird sound I spend a lot of time with the truck. I'll check the plugs in the morning. At first I thought it was a natural gas leak. Then I smelled my exhaust.

I'm just surprised it's happening this early my Tacoma had cats fail somewhere around 200k.

I'd say about 90% of it was in Minnesota. Then the rest was between Colorado and Illinois. Lots of Towing always hauling something this truck has definitely not been babied.

Maybe change brand of fuel. One of my good friends has had two Lexus IS300’s with the dredded smell. Comes to find out on his 16’ IS300 is was just the brand of gas. Hasn’t been back in 15k miles.

I’m assuming that this smell has been over a few tanks of fuel.

Maybe you need to floor it now and again to keep them cleared out. Sometimes I smell it on new cars. I just figure they drive like an old lady and finally grew some balls.:burnrubber:

Edit just read that you tow

Thanks. It's been a good truck I've definitely taken care of it more than my other ones. I've had more problems from trucks that sit.

I'm about 2 and a half tanks in. It started around Friday. I try to only fill up at larger gas stations to avoid bad fuel but it could still happen. I can't smell much today or I'd go check right now lol.

sorry if i missed it, but it doesn't sound like OP has a thrown a code yet for bad cat converter. sounds like the only indication the cats might be bad are the smell of the exhaust. i'd venture a guess that his cat converters are fine.

I kinda agree with this. No codes yet, i would prob leave it alone. Maybe fill up at a different station. Just keep the thought in the back of my mind

Throw some high octane fuel in her. Thats what i was told when my sports cars sat for the winter to clean it out.
