I was near the back, just the cute little 4Rs behind, I could hear you pretty well.

Cool that answers a lot. I kinda miss having a cb though. Had it on my Tacoma. Too much work to install one. I like the idea of a car kit on a portable. Let’s see your car kit setup!

It was just the hand held connected to a mag mount on the roof. I still had to tune it every time I used the mag mount.. there are some cheaper cb handhelds now a days. Fry’s sells the road tripper cobra’s I believe. If you catch em with the coupon code you can get the bundle for a good deal if you really want to go cb.

Also I really wouldn’t go all out if you were to go that route.. just a basic setup with decent size tunable antenna is great.. it all depends on the other guys’ setups as well. They can have the best system on a shit tune and just transit garbage to the whole group.

Other guys have chimed in with good info. Is the rugged one worth it? To me, it is. I have both though. I started with the baofengs and eventually bought a rugged. Biggest thing about the baofengs is they suck to program, unless you get the laptop software. I didn’t know it existed until after I bought a Rugged though.

The reason I bought the Rugged one is that I wanted something I could change on the fly. As someone else has said, it’s probably just a rebranded baofeng with better quality control, different color, and slightly different software. The biggest investment you can do with a baofeng or rugged handheld is the antenna. I purchased their ducky antenna and put it on a baofeng and it exponentially increases the receiving range. You can’t transmit as far as you can receive because of the radio’s wattage, but it surprised me.

Last thing, which was a big deal to me since I didn’t know what I was doing, was the customer service. These guys will literally answer the phone anywhere they are to help you. I have called them at times when they are obviously at races and the guy is trying to help me and I can hear the cars going by in the background. Additionally, they go to almost all the main events that we have been to and they bring a trailer for sales and tech support. Good group of people.

Also, I don’t think I ever mentioned it, but my setup consists of the following:

    - Rugged RM-25R permanent mount in vehicle.
    - Rugged handheld with ducky antenna to use when I jump out to spot, go hiking, or need to walk ahead of the trail for some reason.
    - Baofeng with extended battery and ducky antenna (this is an extra if someone forgets theirs or we need another radio dor any reason)

I checked out the prices on the portable and it seems like same price as yesterday. Can you check?

Since we sometimes drive two vehicles when we head out with the camper (our daughters live here and sometimes come with us), we've found cell phone often don't have a signal which isn't good when somebody needs to make a potty-break or we need to stop for something.

So we just have a couple of hand-held radios that work great.

Good morning! I'm shopping and can't work out if you mean you prefer the baofengs or the rugged? Can you advise? I'm on the site checking out that HUGE sale right now.

I’m gonna try this. Hate leaving my radio in my cup holder. That’s precious real estate when we’re wheeling.

Yeah, it just seemed like it would be annoying. Do you have to push a button or anything when you talk on the headset?

No response. When I was checking the prices yesterday it was the same price as today. So not sure if they started the sale early or that’s their “normal” price.

Just plugs into the handset. Then I can keep the radio on my visor and use that instead of keeping the radio in my cup holder. It’s only like $6. As a matter of fact I’m more worried it might be too cheap.

Ya. You would still need press in with that option.. also would still need to have the handheld mounted/in a cup holder still.

That works.. you can mag mount it. Just get those strong magnet mounts. It never worked for me but u can give it a shot.
I stopped putting it in my visor. Poker flat it came down and smacked my head. Luckily I have center console and have some cup holders to spare :anonymous:

So the one you showed us has a longer chord connecting the handset to the radio? And it's cheap-ass, um, a great price? Link please.
