Coilovers hitting steering arm - Toytec / Radflo 2.5 *solved*

My coilovers comes in contact w be steering arm at/close to full lock. I have the radflo and Camburg uca. Anybody else w a 2.5 coilovers has the same issue? @ToyTec Lifts ? @HBdirtbag ? @csuviper ?

I have Camburg uca.

 

If that’s the case then everyone running Camburg uca and 2.5 coilovers will have the same issue.?

 

I'd say it looks like you need to take some of the caster out, leaning the top of the spindle forward would move the tie rod off of the coilover.

 

yep..thats a lot of caster. I think I'm at 4 with TC UCAs. I would start first with getting proper alignment.

 

Damn I guess there goes the saying get the most caster you can while maintaining camber/toe. @dcsleeper408 ?

 

actually just checked my last alignment sheet and it's 3.1 caster. Not sure why the guy let you go with 7 and in the red.

 

A lot of people recommend high caster for better handling.

That is how Camburg arms are, you will not be able to get it down much either, maybe enough not to rub?, hard to say. 3-4 degrees castor is fine.

 

No, they work fine with other 2.5 coilovers. 7 degrees is too much imo.

alignments can be a PIA...always have hard time finding a good shop that knows what they are doing. Had to take my truck to 3 different shops to get it right...grrr

Mine very slightly wanders right but I am sure that is road crown. On some streets it goes straight for a good while. The truck does chop a bit on tight u turns and lock outs.. We have similar setups- only different is tires and uca
Now I can’t say that these are ideal numbers to go by. I just can’t tell my actual wear anymore because all the tires are just chunking from the off pavement schenanigans. Also at 4.7 degrees I was grazing my cab mount even with my chop, but that was also with really bad toe and a hair more camber.

As we all know positive caster is good for our trucks but too much can cause steering rack issues. Everyone’s truck is not all the same.
You should post the numbers you got from les schwab after A.I maybe someone can help with the current #’s

I never knew the camburgs yield 7-8. I can see what @Cuzican is saying as far as the top being rotated causing it to touch the tie rods. When I checked out the suspension Saturday I didn’t see any signs of wear. I’m sure the les schwab tech possibly tweaked it worse especially now since you are rubbing cab mount.. at 7 degrees I would think you would be further away.

 

The Camburgs add 2.5 Degrees of additional caster, just as mentioned, if possible pull your cast down, this will open up clearance between the coilover. The Tundra usually aligns at high 2 degrees with factory UCA so even when adding the camburgs you should be able to pull it down to 5.5 which IMO is still too much for pavement driving but will help.

 

Thanks for the advice. I’m removing the Camburg for now and reinstalling the stock a arms. If I reduce caster I rub my cab mount. I don’t have time to make aftermarket uca work for now. Like you said that’s a lot of caster for pavement. My truck is 99.9% pavement pounder and 0.01% mall crawler so I should be fine until I get my cab mount chop.

If I wanted to go aftermarket uca without adding a lot of caster but keeping my tires away from the cab mount what would you recommend?

Reducing caster will move the top of the wheel forward and should, in my mind, help keep it from rubbing the cab mount. I had 6* of caster and it drove well and didn't hit the tie rod or cab mount after the chop. It was close to the C/O so when I switched to @Coachbuilder1 tie rods I talked with Dave before buying . They're bigger and straight but He told at 2-3* caster they wouldn't hit and they don't. The alignment shop should be able to reduce your caster to 4-5*.
