Are you sure you ran out of gas? There’s like 5 or 6 more gallons after it reads empty.

"primed it" how did you do that?

I'm no expert, but you could hold it in start for a min and maybe it needs to let the fuel travel to the engine (you probably already did this)

or give removing the negative battery terminal for a few min a try.

Maybe you burnt out the fuel pump. Those extra few gallons are supposedly there to keep the fuel pump cool.

I’m not sure, it’s in the fuel tank. Hopefully someone will chime in.

    Buahhhaaahhhaaa. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

You can disconnect the fuel line, point the end into a bucket, have someone cycle the key to the on position.

stupid question but did you try to start it in neutral? My gear selector in my old hyundai sometimes would not fully set into park activating the safety sensor. took me 2 hours to figure it out. LOL

Personally I would play stupid and take it /have it towed to the dealer and try to have it fixed under warranty.

Lesson learned don't do that again.

doesnt matter if you have .2 mi or 200000 miles.. if you run your truck completely out of gas the pump/sending unit can be damaged

hopefully you can get it hauled onto a road and have toyotacare tow it to a dealership

Probably should ask a mod to delete this so there's no evidence.
    Just saying...

Not sure why it would kick off but did you check your fuel cutoff switch?

If your asking me, you should not perform this task

However, this could lead to a rather funny story, so what the hell.

Most modern fuel systems you need to get a fuel line disconnect tool set. They’re rather cheap and easy to use. YouTube has a ton of videos on performing this task safely.

Now to do this even safer and not even disconnect the fuel line, your fuel rail has a test port for messsuring fuel pressure. Most auto parts stores will let you borrow the tester and will not charge you if the tool is returned. On your fuel rail, drivers side, a shrader valve is available to test this out. Won’t cost you but fuel back and fourth.

    Looks like this.
