Driving directions on HUD disappeared

Why would the navigation directions on my HUD have disappeared? The last time I used navigation (from Carplay, Google Maps), the directions were as usual on the multi-media screen, but did not appear on the HUD as they have in the past. Please tell me that I inadvertently messed up a setting and not that this is part of a subscription service that I did not renew when the free period expired. thanks,

 

The Toyota navigation directions appear on the HUD but I've never had Google Maps directions appear on the HUD. Google maps does show on the guage cluster, so I do find it strange that it's not on the HUD.

 

Same for me and when the 1 year trial ended so did the directions in HUD for the Toyota navigation.

 

Were you using navigation through Carplay?

 

Yes, but when my free year was ending I started using the Toyota navigation and it showed up in HUD. I just wanted to see if it was worth the subscription for the Toyota app but decided it wasn't. I use Google Maps and I'm happy with it and using Waze occasionally so I let it expire.

 

Navigation in the HUD is only supported with the Toyota Navigation. Anything coming through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto will only be shown on the head unit. It has always been this way.

 

when I have my Apple CarPlay navigating with Apple Maps it definitely gives me directions on the heads up display to the left of my speedo

 

Really? There must be some odd thing happening for it to be there and then gone on some trucks. They have been working on resolving some of the CAN communication issues within the Combination Meter and Head Unit, this being one of them.

 

Not sure if HUD uses same information from the cluster display but Apple CarPlay only shows navigation turn on the cluster if you use it with Apple map.

 

I'll try the Apple Maps on CarPlay on the way home today and see if it works on my 24 1794 LE

 

That must be the thing, but who uses Apple Maps on the regular? It has improved over the years, but Waze is way ahead of it.

 

Can’t speak for the others. Never used anything other than Apple Maps

That's it then. Apple Maps only for CarPlay to display on Combination Meter and HUD.

 

I used Waze years back when I was still
On Android but damn it would make the phone so hot and drain the battery way more than google maps did at the time.

 

It's great on iOS.

 

You gotta try Google Maps via CarPlay. The satellite view is awesome. I think it's a superior navigation app than Apple, Waze, or Toyota's, as well.

Gotcha. I don't have the HUD. Doubt I'd use it, even if I did.

My wife is used to Apple Maps. So, when we travel, she often compares Apple Maps to my displayed Google Maps. More often than not, Google Maps shows the best routes, more accurate traffic alerts, work zones etc...It even alerts you to police/speed traps, which has saved my bacon a few times.

And the satellite view is just plain cool, to me.

 

I can confirm that Apple Maps does show up in the HUD on CarPlay.

Thanks for making the check. Disappointing Toyota does not support the functionality in Android Auto with Google Maps.

 

Apple enabled Google Maps HUD support not that long ago and then apparently killed it after a few weeks. Happened across manufacturers, so has nothing to do with Toyota.

Just wanted to make another run at this issue. After a short trip today, I miss that the navigation instructions do not display on the head-up display (HUD). I am using Google Maps with Android Auto. I did not renew the Toyota paid subscription service where the nav instructions did display on the HUD. Is there anyway to make this work with Android Auto? Is switching to CarPlay an option that works?

 

I thought someone reported turn by turn works with car play and apple maps. I've never been able to get TBT with Android Auto. Are you sure you weren't using the native Toyota navigation?

 

Also using Android Auto but I only have the mini MID on my Tundra, not the full digital cluster. No turn by turn options show up even though I'm pretty certain they could.

I borrowed a Highlander from the dealership where the directions showed on the instrument display (no HUD). The subscription was active on the Highlander and I could get both Toyota directions and Android Auto/Google Maps to show up.

I would also like to know why such a feature has to be tied to a subscription. Maybe there's a way to use Techstream to get past this??

Initialy I figured that Toyota wanted to rope us into a subscription in order to get turn by turn to work on the HUD, but since it works for car play I'm guessing it's an AA problem? Nothing I lose sleep over, just another oddity of the modern world....

 

Interestingly, turn by turn just started showing up on my MID a few days ago when using google maps (I obviously don’t have a HUD). I actually don’t like it, it’s not helpful when I have a much larger display. I haven’t paid for any subscriptions but maybe something is active since I’m under 3 years old?

edit: according to Reddit it was an update to google maps that recently made it start working. Apparently it’s worked for some time with Apple Maps. I only have safety and service connect trials going.
