Replacement transmission oil cooler radiator hose sizes? (Discontinued Toyota Part) [2003 V6 5VZ-FE]

Replaced radiator a few days ago with a Denso one and the original transmission oil cooler hoses that plug onto the nipples on the radiator fit pretty loosely despite putting the hose clamp back into it's original indentation. I now have a slow transmission oil drip on the right side hose at the nipple.I believe the nipples on the Denso radiator are ever so slightly smaller than the OEM toyota radiator.

Looked up the part numbers on Toyota EPC:

Both discontinued and not available for purchase. Has anyone replaced these hoses with generic auto parts store hose on their Tundra? What size worked for you?

Or possibly even thinking about pulling the line and throwing on a German Norma worm gear hose clamp instead of the original Toyota spring clamp.

 

I just used 3/8s fuel hose. Denso is the OEM for the 5vz. Good idea to replace that radiator every 10yrs to avoid the potential Pink Milkshake syndrome. Does it have the A340 trans? If so good trans that like a D/F every 25k or so with maxlife. Luck and enjoy.

 

Update: Bought a 2 foot length of generic Autozone 3/8ths transmission oil cooler hose and the hose walls were thinner than the original toyota hose by about 40% so the OEM clamps didn't fit on tight enough. I could easily twist and spin the hose around on the nipples with the clamp fully in place.

My norma german hose clamps were too large and I couldn't find a perfect fitting el cheapo worm gear hose clamp in my assortment of hose clamps. They all had a gap at the top where the worm gear was when fully tightened down and weren't perfectly circular so I didn't feel comfortable using those.

I put the old hose back on for now with the original clamps until I find a solution. I wonder what the dealership uses when you bring it in and tell them to replace them since the part is discontinued.

Were you able to reuse the OEM spring hose clamps when you replaced your lines?

 

They seemed OK but I put new hardware there too just for grins. Also added a 3/8s magnefine yet I do not think its really necessary. The dealer probably uses something generic that works ok.

 

Update: Bought 3 feet of some new old stock discontinued Dayco 3/8 Made in USA transmission oil cooler hose on ebay (couldn't find USA made hose anywhere else; even gates is made in Mexico now) and this set of "Norma German Style" hose clamps on Amazon:

I used the 10-16mm sized hose clamps from the kit and so far everything is good. You can also use genuine norma size 9-16mm hose clamps but I didn't feel like spending the $ as they were expensive. This style hose clamp is superior to the old school perforated hose clamps as they don't cut into the hose as the teeth are on the outside and they maintain a circular shape better when tightened compared to regular perforated worm gear ones. The original OEM spring hose clamps still wouldn't fit the Dayco hose tight enough so you HAVE to buy new clamps if you change the hoses.

3 feet of hose was enough for both lines with about 6 inches to spare at the end.

 

I see you got it sorted with the new hose and clamps, but for the archives, here are a couple other easy solutions if someone finds themselves in a similar situation:

1) Cut about an inch off the end of the hose so you have a "virgin" piece of hose going around the new nipple. Usually, this will do the trick.

2) If you do end up getting new hose and the OD is considerably smaller so the clamps don't fit properly, find a thin walled fuel hose or even vinyl tubing from the hardware store and cut about a half inch off the end. Use needle nose pliers to stretch it out so it fits over the end of the transmission hose. This does two things: 1) provides some clamping force on the connection -- in fact, many times this is enough to provide a leak free connection if the hose/nipple connection are reasonably tight. 2) increases the overall OD so now the larger clamps fit.
