I tried the "bump start" where one turns the key to "START" then lets go. Sure enough! It continued to crank and started right up.

So yes, it does do that.

 

I think they started doing that in 03. Not sure if it was standard or an added feature. But my 03 and 06 both have it.

 

Shifty had mentioned it earlier in this thread and I said I'd try it. I did today.

My dad says his 2005 GMC Canyon will do it......gotta try that now.

He thinks it's there because some people can't hear the engine start? I don't see a purpose for it to be honest.

 

Find it super convenient to just turn and let go and not wait for start.

 

"Super convenient" how? How long is a key's turn held to start anyway? 1 or 2 seconds max?

Well when I used to have super busy mornings would be able to throw the key and let go, then mount the cell phone, pop the coffee in the center console, and load something in the back seat. Yeah it's just a few seconds. But on even a later model Tacoma find the difference noticeable although not a big deal. Used to only want manual locking hubs, transmission, and windows too. But now find them convenient!

 

I still want a manual shift but not having to wade through mud and back into the truck after locking in the hubs is nice......I could get by with crank windows though......be a bit of a pain....cop might think I'm "hiding contraband" when I'm just rolling the window down but I never recall those needing any service. LOL

I don't drink coffee and my cell phone "mounts" into a cup holder or my pocket. Flip phone FTW! (Serious, flip phone here all the way).

 

My dad's 07 Tacoma doesn't have it.
I like it because I can bump start the truck while standing outside of it. That way I don't get that first blast of hot summer or cold winter air to the face.

It's there because you're not starting the truck like on an older vehicle where turning the key directly turns on the starter, turning the key tells the computer to turn on the starter and monitor the engine to see when it starts. Turning the ignition is no different than pushing the "start" button in new cars, they just didn't want people freaking out over it. If you really want to get annoyed, ride in a new car or truck that turns off the engine at every stop and restarts when you step on the gas.

 

That would add an unnecessary extra step

 

I've seen (actually heard) those! Worst was a lady was trying to park and didn't get in between the lines evenly....since she had to stop a couple of times to pull forward or back up, engine kept restarting. Insanity. Great way to burn extra fuel while wearing out a starter motor....no thanks! Fortunately that federal rule is being rescinded.

I don't like push-button start cars either.....not unless it truly has a starter button and no computers. Seems like I drove something that really had a starter button but I can't recall what that was.....

 

Long ago I took flight lessons, right after I got a driver's license. One of the lessons that has stayed with me was "always turn off all electronics before cutting the engine. Also, never start the engine if any electronics are turned ON as there may be a power surge that burns that out."

I simply applied that to driving a car and never wavered.

 

Quick to find the cancel / override switch. Wonder how many starters those cars will go through ... and if they'll be as labor intensive (expensive) to replace as the bestgen.

My CR-V has the start/stop. It would annoy the hell out of me. I would use a lighter brake pressure at stop lights to keep it from activating half the time until I would remember to turn it off. I just recently bought an $18 harness that plugs into the switch to make it default to off unless I want to turn it on. Best $18 I ever spent.

My CR-V has almost 80k miles and I have no doubt that the starter will last. They designed them to account for the extra wear on them. Also, there is a study that I read that the break even point is 10 seconds for fuel injected cars. The problem is that the amount that most of us will save is pennies over a full tank and the automakers were just using it as a way of increasing the mileage on cars. The government finally did something right by having them remove this feature as most people don't want it. Hurray.

 

I wonder how those knobs would look with my silver bezel?
