67k miles, whine only when accelerating

Been having this whine noise for a week or so now. Its faint with the windows up and not noticeable with the radio at 10 vol. But man its a lot louder than I thought. Dropped the back window down this morning headed in to work and you can really hear it.

Only when accelerating. Sounds is like a buzzing whine.

Apologies, this is my first post and can't for the life of me figure out how to attached the video I took from this morning Reddit comments were pointing to a carrier bearing, but its not a clunky or howling noise. Noise is present at all accelerations no matter the speed.

No performance lost. trans, engine, everything is solid feeling.

 

Have you heard about the wire screen in the intake? Mine sounded like a faint turbo until I replaced it.

if it ONLY happens when accelerating, then it'd be engine related. if it happens at any and all times and changes with speed, then that could be anywhere in the truck. seems odd it is louder when the back glass is down. what about when the front windows? what about when sitting still and in neutral revving the engine?

 

Could be the rear differential. Does it happen under load and coasting? Might want to check wheel bearings

It’s your screen in the intake. Cut it out and no more whistle/whine.

 

Pretty close to the sound, same whining noise but I tried reving in park with the door open, and didnt hear it.

 

Tried revving in park with the driver door open, didnt hear it. My first thought was alternator last week when it started, but front windows down while driving I dont hear it, still faint like I have the the all windows up. Put the back glass down its really noticeable. Could be sound traveling as I'm moving forward but kinda ruled out the alt since revving in park can't reproduce the sound.

 

Ill look into it, i traded in my 19 tacoma for the 20 tundra. Family got bigger so does the truck I suppose. 150k on the tacoma not one thing ever made noise or needed replacing. 2 weeks into the tundra and now I have a s/c apparently ,, man life is good

 

Sounds like the differential. Maybe a bearing going out or a tooth fractured.

The screen in the intake is a slight whistle, it's not what you're talking about.

 

And it's not through the speakers, right? It doesnt ocilate louder with higher RPMs etc? It could be a grounding strap needed or replaced if it is from speakers-ish...

 

Did you install any new stereo equipment in the truck?

 

It does get a little more pronounced when going faster, but not from speakers. Its alot fainter with the windows up, soon as I roll the back glass down its considerably louder.

 

No all factory, the sound is louder with the back glass rolled down, so its definitely something outside

 

Yea i looked at a few videos about the mesh screen last night. Thats not the noise, sounds more of something like a water pump or prower steering when its struggling. Revving in park doesnt create the sound, only when I accelerate. So it's def something when on load. Almost like a buzzy fuel pump, but nothing is compromising performance when driving so idn lol. Not wobbles, shakes, no clanking. Just a buzzy whine sound

 

I started thinking fuel pump too when you said that about the back glass down making it louder

 

Could or be the idler pulley or alternator pulley? If it's from the back end, likely the rear end, from the front, a pulley needs attention. This feels like Jeopardy!

 

At like 35 to 55 mpg my rear end makes a wine noise when I lightly get on the throttle, the noise mostly goes away when I left off the gas. Been this way pretty much since new, 85k miles now.

 

The easiest way to tell if it’s the idler puller or belt tensioner is to warm it up, then spray water on it. If it goes silent, you’ve found the problem. Still sounds like the intake mesh to me. I had a very similar weird noise (only under acceleration sounded like a supercharger.) I cut the mesh out and it went away.

 

As for the mesh, I do hear what everyone is saying that's more of a whistle from say 0 to 30ish. The sound I'm hearing starts at dead stop acceleration and gets pretty pronounce around 50+

 

Every vehicle I have owned for the last 35 years has had a pronounced whine and high-pitched squeel that comes from the front passenger seat during acceleration.

Finally got time to get under and see if anything sticks out. This is the only thing I found. Went under the entire bottom, under hood, through fender walls. Idn if this would be cause a whine noise. Obviously seems I need to replace but is it anything to be super concern atm. Sorry I'm not mechanic nor I pretend to be. I know my limits lol

I'm thinking fuel pump noise

 

I would remove the serpentine belt and start it up, if the noise is gone, you know it’s one of the items on the belt train. It would at least rule that out.

 

Well it's in the shop at the dealership, so we shall see what they come up with

 

Looks like the output shaft seal has failed. Really rare in tundra’s. What’s the fluid level?

 

I’ve had a few things happen that caused whining noises,

1st - whining noise was only noticeable enough between 34-40mph under acceleration. Self diagnose it…..while the vehicle is rolling on the road safely put it in neutral and see if the noise goes away, mines did and it was the rear differential assembly. They replaced it under warranty.

For this one the service tech initially blew me off and told me it was normal, I told them it is not normal and requested to ride with the service manager. It took a while for the manager to finally hear the noise but he did hear it and he was able to replicate it by doing what I described above.

2nd- whining noise only under acceleration at any speed, ended up being the screws on the front metal skid plate were loose and 1 missing (dealership’s fault)

3rd - currently experiencing a slight whine under acceleration but it only happens when the AC is on, I haven’t looked too much into it

I haven’t done the intake screen mod yet.
