10 hours of driving yesterday, first time using the adaptive cruise control. This thing is a game changer. Well done, Toyota!

Yeah I hate when the slower car moves out of the way and the truck just floors it to get back up to the set speed lol

My Tundra is more refined than my 24 Civic. For the most part they both work good with the Tundra being smoother in heavy traffic. Neither like it when the distance in front changes rapidly.

Or the opposite, when a vehicle slows down in front of you and the truck acts like it deployed a parachute...lol.

My wife's 2018 Fusion is very smooth, you usually can't tell when it's adjusting the speed, unless someone cuts you off pretty hard.

I've used it maybe 1% of the time since I bought my 2018 new.

I like using it on super long stretches. It does the job without me having to brake and restart cruise control.

Have both 18 tundra 2x now and a 23 Sienna.

A couple times recently I've had the experience where I'm using cruise control while following another vehicle until the other vehicle goes into a turn lane and slows down. Even though I was no longer following the other vehicle, the system believed I was still following the other vehicle and was about to rear end the other vehicle and initiated emergency warnings and strong braking. I've been able to turn off cruise control relatively quickly but still a bit disconcerting when this happens, particularly the strong braking if being followed by another vehicle who is not expecting me to abruptly slow down. And not sure my wife would be so quick to turn off cruise control if she were in the same situation. Anyone aware of a setting adjustment or other to keep this from happening?

Press and hold the button to disable adaptive cruise and then it’s just speed based cruise. You have to press and hold every time you want to set to cruise again though which is annoying in traffic.

I also had your experience and did not appreciate it. Searched the site and found that when you initially turn on the cruise you must hold the "on" for about five seconds until the truck no longer reads "radar ready" and you will have the normal cruise you were likely used to.

I really dislike the adaptive cruise.

I want to drive my car and DON'T want my car to slam on the brakes on the highway. Very dangerous in my opinion.

Luckily with Toyota, you press the cruise button and hold for 2 seconds and it reverts to an old fashioned speed control which stays in that mode until you turn cruise off completely.

(Since I am in the driver's seat I can't tell for sure)

Do the break lights actually come on when the adaptive cruise does a break or slow down? I am thinking it SHOULD for safety reasons, but I do not know for sure.
Just something that I have been wondering about every time I am using it.

    (Let the pontificating begain)

Whatever this forum told me to do
    it’s worser when you have a s/c.

cuz the cruise unit don’t know you have a s/c.

I have noticed that extreme braking when someone exits too slow.
I have just learned to temporarily hit cancel before truck reacts, then resume when they fully clear the lane.

I also wonder if the brake lights come on when adaptive does the braking.

I love the adaptive cruise. Let it do its thing for long trips. You still have to pay attention though and use your brain and think. If you just rely on it to do everything the way you think it should then you are going to be disappointed. I drove from Texas to Arizona and back and absolutely loved it. I can’t stand my wife’s Durango that doesn’t have it.

If i remember right, if it starts slowing down because it's sensing something you just press the gas witch will override the auto braking. Then after passing the object let off the gas and it will still be working/Set and then you don't have to turn it off and on or deal with heavy braking if it's not needed.

I will say I resisted anti-lock brakes and traction control on motorcycles, but it has grown on me, so perhaps the adaptive cruise will as well.

However, and not to besmirch anyone who likes these auto-drive technologies, I am not ready to join Chevy owners in playing patty cake on the highway.

Got caught out in a violent summer storm on I-80 just east of Cheyenne in July. Viz went down to almost zero in nothing flat, and nowhere to safely get off even if we could see it. Was behind a semi who's tail lights I could see, so used the adaptive as a "tether". Worked out quite nice as it kept us moving safely and accurately through the storm given that minimal visual reference. I'm a fan.

I was resistant at first, mainly from using it in my wife's Mazda which SLAMS on the brakes hard.

I quite like it in my Tundra, since apparently no one has any concept of how to hold a constant speed.

Regular cruise control was pretty much the same as just driving, but the gas pedal was a lever on my steering wheel instead of a pedal on the floor. Up, down, up, down

With the adaptive cruise control, after you shorten the follow distance it does a pretty good job. I will hit Cancel and the Resume to prevent it from hammering the gas in certain situations.

I never thought about it that way, but I would agree that most of the time I used it as soon as someone was in front, I felt that parachute deployment (and I messed with distance and sensitivity), but still it was always hard braking.

That’s a good point. I always put mine at 2 bars instead of 3. Makes it feel much more natural for my style of driving.

I put mine on the largest distance. Then I put my speed 10MPH below the speed limit. I have never felt the adaptive cruise control slam on the brakes always smooth as can be.....

So you’re the person blocking the left lane doing 10 under.
