I would see if Toyota could foot the bill for the Terra limited and the transport of it to your house in a fully enclosed truck for all they put you through! And if they can’t put you in the color you want, make them discount it even more since it’s not the exact truck you had before. Just my 2 cents…

Sounds like a good plan! Terra is a great color.

Regardless of which, my personal opinion if its worth anything would be to swap in 5w30 or even 10w30 immediately, like on day1. I still think the thin oil and other things is whats causing the issues with the trucks. Still firm on the LSPI / detonation and the thin oil cant handle it so the engine knocks the rod bearings out. The thicker oil would
    1) help create a thicker viscous layer on the bearings
    2) help prevent LSPI from the introduction of the thin oil into the combustion chamber escaping past the rings

The compression is high for a boosted application
The boost is very high for such a high compression engine
    The ring gaps are big
This makes the possibility of oil getting past the rings more likely, and crankcase pressure higher
The few tear downs i have seen have all been pretty much the same, rod and crank bearings blue'd and rings burnt to the pistons. Still leaning heavily on the pre-ignition (cylinder mixture combusting on its own before valves open and spark plug fires) which causes the piston to be forcefully pushed downward while its still on its upward stroke. Since the valves are not open as they should be, the unexpected combustion has nowhere to go but past the rings which is whats burning and cooking the rings to the piston.
This is still my observations from videos of tear downs, i cant guarantee this is the actual cause of whats happening but all of the signs point to pre-ignition and the thin oil is a big factor due to potentially getting past the rings and causing an ignition source in the combustion chamber. Also when the pre-ignition happens, the thin oil is not able to adequately protect the bearings which almost instantly knocks the rod and crank bearings out and blues the bearings.

TLDR : i still think switching to a thicker oil is a great play, 10w30 in summer and 5w30 in winter. Screw all this carbon footprint water weight oil garbage. Put real oil in the engine, thats what i would do.

FWIW for the <24hrs I had the truck back it got a full tank of premium fuel (the engine blew with ~50 miles to empty, by the time I finally got to drive it again 7 weeks later, it had been on 0 miles to empty for about a week and a half and 20 miles of driving).

I also have a 5W-30 oil cap in the garage waiting for the new truck :p

I'm all on board with the LSPI theory

    Bummer....
Any word back from Toyota about the replacement / buy back?
Have you heard back from the Lemon attorney or any of those rugrats doing the paperwork at Toyota on it?

Nada from Toyota since Tuesday. I sent the Toyota rep an email this afternoon asking what the next steps are or when they’ll decide whether they are replacing or repurchasing, hopefully I’ll get an answer on Monday.

Not a word from the lemon attorney

The 26' models dont have your color of choice, did you choose a second color option for a 26' would be favorable?
Having to lose your perfectly optioned truck, plus the 9 weeks of hassle, and take a truck that isnt the same color AND lose -$6,000 seems like a no go for me but it aint my call.
No more 25' terra colors out there i guess? Has anyone at Toyota themselves done a real inventory search for you yet? Seen if there is something that we couldnt find? I think there were 3 or 4 Terra colored units that were Limited, TRD OR, and checked like 9 of 11 of the options you had listed as wants. Are any of them still available? Would be nice if someone at Toyota that could look at real time inventory would help you out and pull some strings. Losing a whole lotta money to trade up into a 26 model because of dealer ineptitude AND losing your color choice seems to be a hard pill to swallow.

I do believe, as i stated back in early July, that i was scared that your truck would never be the same after they split it open. The oil leaks, oil stains on the seats, fingerprints everywhere, scratches, someone else been farting in your seat for weeks now.... I mean.... All big no's for me too. I couldnt keep it being hodge podged together and i certainly wouldnt wanna lose money because of the dealer either

There's a near replica to my truck that exists, but it is outside the region (Wyoming actually) and Central Atlantic Toyota has told me flat out that they cannot pull vehicles from different regions, and that is assuming it has the exact same options/PIOs as my vehicle. I tried to get them to grab a local truck that has far fewer options/PIOs (about $2500 lower TSRP) and I don't even care about the financial differences and they said they are unable to do that, if they are either building a replacement or getting one from a dealer it has to match everything line for line

I think you have some slight confusion. He can get a '26 with no money out of pocket, but it takes time, OR he can do the repurchase that will cost him money but let him go for something on the lot now.

    This is exactly correct...

Either Toyota shafts me in time (another 3 month wait) and I get a vehicle "for free"... Or Toyota shafts me in money and I can go buy another vehicle right now.

There's option C as well, which may or may not work out; which is simply trade it in. One local dealer in an email exchange today offered me a staggeringly low trade in amount, and when I balked at it they said "we have wiggle room but we need to see the vehicle in person"

In your shoes, I'd be taking the new truck at no financial cost. I'd rework the trip. But, that's me.

I'd also scorch that dealership that effed it up on every platform available. Heck, might even take a weeks vacation to sit on the sidewalk out front and warn people going in.

I might be a bit petty, but I'm sick of companies screwing up and the customer being the one who has to pay.

The final update - August 30

Short version - My desire for a quick resolution outweighed getting top dollar out of this situation....

Longer version - As of late on 8/28, the plan was to trade the truck into CarMax and fly out to Oregon to grab a 2.5 gen Tundra with 19k miles and drive it home (I refuse to be out of pocket for another 3rd gen and don't want to wait >3 months)... The timing was off with too many other things going on around here this weekend, which lead me to start looking into other options that could save me 2900 miles of driving. Somehow I stumbled upon switching from a truck back to an SUV, and started looking at GX460s. This morning I woke up, planning on looking at a '21 GX460 locally, and decided to do another search and found a '22 GX460 Premium Plus that was at a local-ish Lexus dealer, with 30k miles and was certified (yields a 6yr/unlimited mileage warranty from original in service date, or 2 year/unlimited mile from certified sale date) and 20k miles of paid services. So, I'm back in an SUV, with some money in my pocket from the trade.

The F&I Manager asked me why I was getting rid of a '25 Tundra with 1500 miles, and I told him flat out that I had no confidence in the truck since it blew at 1270 miles/10 days old, and that it had spent 9 weeks at the dealer getting fixed. He has a 2.5gen 1794 and wasn't a fan of the V35A :p

Ironically, this Lexus dealer is less than a 1/4 mile from where I bought the Tundra

Last photo of the TERRABL one
    upload_2025-8-30_16-44-34.jpg

Also if anyone is looking for 3rd gen Tundra parts, they'll be flooding the classifieds over the coming days as soon as I start taking pictures... Mostly little stuff, except for a GoFastCampers topper (black panels, F/R windows, with the MOLLE panel on order) that is sitting at Apex Overland in NC ready to go... $5000 installed and it can be yours as soon as you can make an appointment, no need to wait until mid/late October for the next shipment!

I don't think words can appropriately thank all of you in the 3rd gen forums enough for your willingness to bear through my (almost) never ending updates with words of support. Maybe I'll try again when the 3.5 gen comes out :p

Congrats on the Lexus. Glad you were able to find some resolution in the end even if it wasn't another Tundra. Post pics of the Lexus when you get a chance.

I would put some 305/50-20 General Grabber ATX on that dude and absolutely rock out.
[it might require 1.5" lift up front and a 1" eibach spring in the rear to keep it semi level but that would be tits.]
