I don’t have any flooring up there, so not really any usable storage space. Just an access point to the attic and ac ductwork. I just figured if I was going to replace the lid I might as well give it an upgrade with the attached ladder, but realistically it would hardly ever see much use.

Beyond in love/jealous.... Looking forward to putting our floor in and one day enclosing it... for now, I am getting a quote for a 40' container dropped in for storage.

i think i'll redo the floors in the garage soon, but the floors in the shop will stay raw. i'm not too concerned about it since it's exactly that...a shop.
after paying for this, i'm kinda regretting not getting a couple containers dropped. :spending::frusty:

The concrete is why we havent done it yet. wrapping our barn is "cheap" enough, but 2200 sqft of concrete, plus the extra kick outs will be too much anytime soon.

I've been working out of containers for 5-6 years now, believe me, you do not regret that beautiful barn. As a matter of fact, if they will drop rates a little I might be following you into the debt land:rofl:

We added the concrete from our existing driveway to the front of it and that was a helluva bill. They proud of that

House question, maybe someone from the New England area will recognize this.

About to start working on a house built in late 1899. This stuff is all over the dining room ceiling, I'm pretty sure it's glued up, and someone has painted over it. I've never seen anything like it, so I'm naturally very curious wtf it is, especially knowing I may be mounting an AP to the ceiling in here and don't want to mess around with asbestos. I can't see it in person until 9 days from now, so I'm not sure what the texture/consistency/material quality is. Almost looks like drop ceiling tile to me, but it's clearly glued in a classic bricklaying pattern. Anyone have any clues what it's specifically called (beyond "ceiling") so I can dig more?

You able to see or find out what size tiles?
Also, if you can see if there are extras in the attic or basement or something and find a manufacturer name on the back.
Worse come to worse, get it sample/ tested before you start anything

Trying to see if there are spares anywhere around the property is high up on the list of things I'll look for while there. But I suspect I'm going to come up empty, I'm sure this was probably done decades ago. It's a really distinct looking tile, and appears fibrous based on texture, texture is unique so I was just hoping to put a name on the style, in the event we can't figure out what it is.

As for size. I actually have an extremely accurate (but not the best resolution) 3D walkthru of the house and this is what their measuring tool (which is highly accurate thus far) is showing me.

Samples to a lab is something we'll probably do eventually, especially if we renovate. I have zero intention of touching the ceilings, but the absence of any drilling or holes was .... suspicious, to me.

I have no idea what we'll find under the linoleum in the bathroom either, so there's a few things here we'll ultimately end up testing - I know not to screw around with pre-80s stuff. I'll be sending off a few plaster wall samples from original walls and added-on walls too.

Ps - I realize not being 9x9 doesn't kill the risk. I've always heard it's 9x9 ceiling tiles you really need to be careful with.

Bring it seems fibrous and if installed pre-80s, most likely is. But I believe most asbestos high risk were typically 2'x4' or 2'x2'.
I believe that's floor tiles that are the 9x9 asbestos tiles.

Both are safe as long as you don't disturb them. But testing would be good regardless to plan for what to do in the future. Remediation that is typically high I believe so that's something to budget for when/if the time comes

Actually, this helped. Looking that up helped me find Celotex, which this stuff highly resembles. Unfortunately, Celotex also went out of business in the 1990s due to asbestos litigation

They apparently made products from the 1920s-1980s. Not all contained asbestos. Some did.

We've got the fold down stairs in our new place, it's a handy space saver. Ours is the wooden ladder version.
I was unfolding the second section of stairs the other day and it slipped out of my hand.... and hit me directly in the bean.
Thankfully for me it's mostly solid bone, so I came out relatively unscathed o_O

I've never heard anyone talk about Celotex before. When I started in construction/trades back in the mid 80s we used it all the time.
Never looked at the ingredients in it, but it was irritating to breathe in and the sawdust was itchy when it stuck to your sweat.
    I'm going to die now aren't I? :eek::rofl:

I'd never heard of it either. It looks like not all their products had asbestos.

There's lots of cool stuff in this house. I'll probably hunt around some of the salvage shops and graveyards, see if I can find these rosettes or trim. Thankfully all the interior doors are original except one, and most of them have what looks like T&C Clark steeple top ornate hinges. I can't wait to boil the decades of paint off the hardware and inhale the lead fumes coming off the water. Pretty cool though, the door trim profile matches the profile of the rosette! Not sure if that's typical or not.

I had 9x9 flooring in my old home's basement. I ripped that all out, in a moderately safe fashion.

Started to get a little sulfur smell from the taps about 2 weeks ago. New stuff to me since I was a city dweller up until 6mo ago.
Decided to try this powered anode first. Figured the water heater just had the standard anode, and not one made for well water.
Easy peasy install, and got rid of the piece of shit drain valves they put on these things as well. Heater is 3yrs old, and has approximately 1.5yrs of actual use (home was a seasonal place for PO. 2022 build)
Anode looks pretty loaded for the amount of time it was in there. Love the hard water here though, it tastes so damn good, and not much if any fixture staining to mention.

I see people raving about this thing so I decided to try it. It aint cheap @ $160, but it's not a one trick pony. It will help with the tank mainly, with the side benefit of curing our sulfur smell. I hope at least.
    20250825_171737.jpg

Spare parts I had for the valve, didn't know how I was going to do it, how deep it was in there etc...
Pretty sure the homeowner installed this... no pan. I think that's a (useless) requirement now days?
Not a plumber, I just pretend sometimes
    20250826_181941.jpg

Anode was buried beneath almost 3" of foam.
    20250826_182015.jpg

    20250826_184256.jpg

    Ooouuugh STAINLESS!
    20250826_185743.jpg

Tidied up the wiring, all zip tied and P clamped. Cord was just long enough.
    20250826_193329.jpg

Spun the tank 45deg to allow for this big protrusion, swivel bib.
    20250826_191421.jpg

No leaks, now we wait for results
Let me know if any of you have/or are using this powered anode, and what you think of it.

Uhhhh, I don't see why it couldn't be used in other tanks/applications to produce the same results.

    For trim stuff.

Check ETSY. We have ordered a ton of stuff from there for trim. There are plenty that will do custom or re-create what you want as well. It's not CHEAP CHEAP but its relatively inexpensive if you are just getting a handful of pieces. That said, maybe your lumbar yard can get a hold of the same stuff too.

Been building a chicken coop over the last two weekends. Looked up some designs on Youtube and drew up my own similar to them. Framed using a bunch of extra lumber and scraps i had lying around from tearing down a deck.

    IMG_0195.jpg

    IMG_0218.jpg

I liked the Third Coast Craftsman style as it looked like a nice shed as opposed to a rickety coop so I framed in and added shed windows.

    IMG_0267.jpg

Painted and trimmed to match the house.

    IMG_0269.jpg

Graded the area with my tractor some more and started laying cinder block down as a foundation for the run. We have everything from bears to coyotes out here so trying to predator proof it as best as I can within reason.

    IMG_0319.jpg

    Building walls of the run.

    IMG_0625.jpg

Cut a dado to fit a deck board to make it more rigid. Upper corner supports to prevent racking.

    IMG_0626.jpg

Stained it. Build the other walls but they're still sitting in my shop.

    IMG_0640.jpg

Built the door and hung it. Still need to fabricate a handle out of some flat stock.

    IMG_0639.jpg

Hopefully adding hardware cloth this weekend and throwing a roof on the run.

Looks great!! A+ How many ladies you going for? Rooster in the plans? Think you'll let them out at all? I had a small flock of like 8 a while back and let them do my whole yard but it was fenced and they had something similar to what you are building to go back to at night. My mother in law has a coop and a small fenced area she uses a little more basic than your run area.

    Anyways, looks great!
