I appreciate all of the feedback. As I mentioned, once burned twice shy is how I approach interviews these days. When it comes to interviews, I'm pretty enthusiastic and charismatic. I'm just not like that on a day to day basis.

In the past I was an accounting manager for a department with a $400 million budget and an accounting team of 47 people. This job is a huge step down for me but I'm done supervising and managing people. I'll take the pay cut for less people drama. Based on my work history, I should be a controller, finance manager, accounting manager etc...

You're hiring me because I excel at cross-functional relationships, especially with non-finance people and am able to speak their language and put things in terms that make sense to them. My work volume beats everyone else in the department to the point I am running laps around my coworkers. I get shit done without the drama.

I'm not the sort that will spend all day jaw jacking and bullshitting around with people. This is Kaliforniastan and the conversations in the workplace are usually tinged with woke nonsense and bs that I want no part of. I don't discuss my politics in the work place or in general, I save it for the voting booth. My politics can be summed up as the following, "All politicians suck ass and they are screwing us over in different parts of our lives". So instead of being vocal about topics, I just shrug my shoulders and go sit in my desk/office and focus on the task at hand while everyone else clutches their pearls and rants about whatever the social justice topic of the day is. I'm good with that, no thanks.

Here is the reality folks, there are a lot of shitty employers out there. Places that are constantly recruiting because no one sticks around. They are non-stop dumpster fires. You see them recruiting for the same positions every 2-3 months and it's not because they are adding headcount but it's because people had enough and left.

There are places where all you get is this weird corporate speak lingo that is straight up nonsensical bullshit. The corporate speak places are the ones the overemphasize "corporate culture", "positivity", and all the other corporate buzzwords that reflect the hollowness of the place.

Successful organizations are focused on their core competencies, business and mission. Places that overuse the corporate speak of the day have constant churn because they are adrift. You see reorg's every 6 months because the foundation of the place is just the latest buzz they are chasing in an attempt to be successful as opposed to any principles.

I need to make sure that I am not walking into that sort of situation. That was my last job. I was assured that the new CFO was different and that the controller had brought stability to the organization. 3 months into the job lo and behold, they fire the controller and everyone up and leaves because the place descends back to being a dumpster fire. Turns out the new CFO is great at corporate speak but is a despicable human being. This is where I look in the mirror and say, hey buddy, the signs were all there and you ignored them. I blame myself for knowing better and signing the dotted line anyway. I'm not doing that again.

We are all adults, we will treat each other with respect, work together and be cordial. Professionals will always have differences in opinions, perspectives and approaches to a challenge. The successful organizations are the ones that focus on alignment. Whatever the discussion is, we leave the room aligned in the next steps and move forward.

Going back to joking around. I don't like being this serious.

    What's the worst?

    Basketball.

I have no idea how it sustains itself.

and ever since I watched "moneyball", I have zero respect for baseball.

Said like a true Gen X. We are not compatible with the younger generation.

My former sister-in-law years ago complained she didn’t like her employer because she wasn’t making any good friends at her job. WTF, this isn’t a social club that occasionally does work. She’s a good person but we didn’t agree on anything ever…

    this is an interesting statement.

Today's yutes think activity is progress.
they want to "appear" busy all day....and not do diddly shit.

we (gen x)like to get shit done and chill.

so, these days being really good & efficient will get you fired and/or poorly evaluated.

I genuinely like this group of folks. Back when I was working, I would check this thread out in the morning while getting ready for work and then after getting home at the end of the day. In many respects it has kept me sane during my time out of work as I don't enjoy sitting around doing nothing while waiting for interviews to pop up.

It’s a common misconception that we keep each other sane. On the contrary, we just align your insanity with ours and then things appear normal.

I tell you this now b/c there’s no way to break the cycle

    :fistbump:

When I was hired at my current job one of the questions one of the owners asked me was if I had the stamina to be able to work in his high volume bar.

My answer to him was, give me two weeks and you'll see how.

    That was five years ago.

And he's still amazed at how his inventory isn't out of control.

Gen X. Get shit done and talk shit while doing it.

I just got the call to schedule an interview with another employer. This job is one I would really like to land. This will definitely take the pressure off of tomorrow's interview.

It's funny how things seem to happen all at once.

So, you don't like it because of the name? Help me understand this.
Soccer players are arguably the most fit athletes in all professional sports. On average they run about 7-8 miles per game with sprinting during plays. The skill to control a ball mostly with your feet while doing all of this running is through the roof. The on the fly tactics of a game are like no sports ever and they constantly shift during play. It's physical as all hell. And it's a ton of fun to play even at a recreational level.

It's a boring, uninteresting game. I honestly don't care how fit they are, so are marathon runners and I'm not going to watch that.

I say any American football game is way more boring than any soccer game. They take, what, 3.5 hours for a 60 minute game? Sounds awfully boring to me.

Soccer is definitely a sport. It is also not more exciting than football. I agree that the athletes are in incredible shape and possess lots of skill, but that does not make it exciting to watch. There are some highlights and some tense moments but overall it's hard to stay interested. At least when a hockey game finishes 1 to 0 there were some fights, big hits, and no ridiculous flops :p

I don't know jack about soccer but I would like to take a week off to attend a World Cup in another country at some point in my life. Just seems like a really fun event in general even for non-soccer people like me.

Live soccer games are like none other. The atmosphere is amazing. The shit talking chants between the teams supporters is so funny. Really good atmosphere. Even the minor league teams in the US have a great atmosphere at a easy to handle cost. If you ever get a chance to go to a Sacramento Republic game I highly recommend it.
