2024 Tundra Hybrid Limited is showing some corrosion on the rear window door channel run. I am not sure if this part is the window panel run, window seal or weather stripping as the parts diagrams online diagrams are all over the place. This truck only has 16,000 miles on it and is not old, so any ideas why this corrosion is showing up? I tried rubbing it off with some different corrosion remover products, but they made minimal improvement. Appears as iff it's rapid oxidation of the finish or similar to rust. Any ideas? Thanks for any advice.

Trees, I see plenty in your reflection. If you frequently park under trees and don't specifically wipe those areas when you wash it, it'll build up. To me, it doesn't look like corrosion, but mold from trees.

I'll look closer at this suggestion, although I do not park under trees regularly (very rarely) and this trim is the only area on the entire truck corroding like this. The rest of the trims and body are all in good condition.

I have a 2024 and mine has the exact same issue. My truck is outside most of the time but the closest tree is 40 feet away. I just bleached the crap out of it and used meguires ultimate black to restore it back to somewhat normal

That’s interesting..if I were to guess (and I am) I would say it wasnt treated/sealed properly on build. Should be covered under warranty?

If this in fact corrosion, it's covered. Return to dealer.

I cleaned and inspected best I could, and the black finish is certainly wearing down allowing the oxidation. I'm not sure what what is causing it. I feel confident it could be taped off, sanded and recoated/painted carefully, but it would be one of those tedious, take your time, PITA jobs. I should be coming up soon on the dealership schedule for the squeaking front breaks TSB and will ask the dealer when I go in for that.

Finished up the brake squeal TSB at the dealership and I asked them to look at the window frame corrosion. Seems this is not overly common but does occur on other third gen tundras. We looked at some others on the lot doing the same thing. So no answer as to a possible warranty fix yet, or possibility of a TSB. They said its still functioning, and replacing the part would be quite significant. Best bet is to contact Toyota corporate and start there with a request for a resolution. I'm going to write Toyota, and hope others do as well.

Heard back from Toyota and they said this trim piece is corroding faster than it should, as with other same age trucks in my location. It is still within spec, so no warranty. They more or less said the UV sunlight is damaging the finish, and replacing the piece would be such a significant repair for a cosmetic issue it is not a valid warranty item. I understand, since the same thing happened on my previous Tacoma. The direct sun in the south can eat away at a finish not manufactured to withstand the extreme heat and sun harshness. They did admit I had a valid concern and it should help towards solving this problem going forward. I hope so and hope it helps to make these vehicles more heat tolerant for hot climates in the future.

What could this black deposit be in this area? If this is just resting on top of the paint this could be what is eating away at the painted trim surface. I checked mine and and this frame is definitely made of steel (magnetic) so most likely just painted with black trim paint.

I would go back to your dealer and ask them what they mean by "still within spec"? Still within spec to what? Did they put a paint thickness gauge to it and take a some readings? Ask them to provide some details, looks to me they are just brushing you off. The truck is made in Texas, damn hot there and you would think it would last a bit longer than just one year?!

No kidding. At this point, Toyota should have plenty of experience with different materials, paints, sun exposure, tree piss, etc. Anything new should undergo plenty of testing prior to release. They shouldn't need OP's help to solve the problem going forward. Hope they make this right eventually.

I had some under carriage bolts that were rusting from the get go. Visible from the rear wheel wells. Never had that on a vehicle before. Looks like the factory ran low and got some untreated bolts at Home Depot. Dealer blew off. So If am periodically wire brushing rust and painting it just as I do with my stick smoker.

I don't think I buy another Toyota because of the service of the only dealer near me. The local GM and Ram dealers for trucks I have had since I lived here and was better.

It's just dirt, I cleaned it better and took new photos. It was a bit darker and later in the day. The other shots were in brighter sunlight.
