OEM Matte Black Steering Wheel Trim and Buttons

I got the idea from seeing a buddy's '25 Tundra and his steering wheel had all matte black trim and buttons. That got me thinking about this mod, but it didn't go anywhere since the OEM parts for the buttons and such were stupid expensive (can't buy just the trim pieces - you have to get the whole sub-assembly).

I can't take all the credit - I saw a post on one of the FB pages and someone said they did this on theirs so I decided to try it. The person on FB got a new gen Tacoma donor wheel and swapped the trim and buttons. I had been searching donor 2025 Tundra wheels, since that change happened on this MY and, as you can imagine, I wasn't finding anything because it's too new for there to be ones from junkyards posted. After seeing the FB post, I looked into the new gen Tacoma and it uses the same wheel as ours AND they had the matte black trim and buttons starting in 2024 MY. I found a '24 Tacoma donor wheel and got it at a good best offer price, so I decided to try my luck at installing the parts.

    Parts/tools needed:
    • Donor wheel from '24+ Tacoma or '25+ Tundra (Got mine for $132 out the door!)
    • Trim removal pry tool
    • Phillips head screwdriver
    • Flat end tool that has length to get to the airbag release bars
    • About 2ish hours of time
First step is to remove the trim you need and buttons from the donor wheel.

Here is my donor wheel as I took it out of the box:

Flip it around and remove the 2 screws at the back trim here - just need a phillips head:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-2-34.png

Then flip it back around and remove these 2 screws - also phillips head:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-3-45.png

Start on the left side of the wheel as I have it pictured. This is the sub-assembly that the volume buttons are at. Now you just need to pry up on the button sub-assembly and it'll pop right out of the clips behind:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-4-52.png

I removed the wire harness to make things easier. Then you will need to use your pry tool to push the tabs that are holding the back housing in place. You'll have to pull a bit on the housing while you are releasing the tabs to get it to pop off. They are around the perimeter and I have some of them circled (might have missed one):

That will expose the circuit board that has the buttons. You can carefully take this out then you'll see the rubber membrane behind it. You can stop there since we'll be able to snap this whole sub-assembly into our current wheel on the Tundra.

Now, move to the other side and take the same step to get to the rubber membrane like we did on the other side. Now, on this side it is a bit more complicated.

If you got a donor wheel from the Tacoma, then you'll need to take the extra steps like I did to remove the buttons from the subassembly as this side of the wheel has a slight difference with the radar cruise control button. There is also a different order of other buttons around cruise functions. Here is the difference of the one button I'm talking about which is why you can't juts replace the whole subassembly like I did on the volume button side:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-20-13.png

Okay, so once you get to the rubber membrane on this side, just remove it for now and you'll see the back of the buttons:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-21-30.jpg

You'll also need to remove the outer matte trim on this one and it's the same process of using the pry tool to get the tabs to pop out (there are more than I have circled around the perimeter):

    upload_2025-8-16_6-23-33.png

Then, you'll need to pop out the tabs of the buttons. You'll see how they are attached when looking in there. Just use your pry tool (possibly two of them) to pry the tabs up and push the buttons out the other side. There are 2 on the left/right seek button and 3 on the mode button:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-26-15.png

Then you'll be ready to go for installing on your steering wheel and next thing we'll need to do is remove the matte trim outside from the button subassembly.

    upload_2025-8-16_6-26-53.jpg

Take your phillips head and remove these 2 screws:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-28-2.png

There is a little retainer for the trim here, just pop the trim up over this:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-29-34.png

Now, this trim piece is funky. It's a large span, but small and thin support so be careful removing this. I started at the top and pulled up with my fingers these 2 tabs:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-31-17.png

Then I used my trim removal tool and worked it in the gap of the trim and the wrap of the wheel and gently pried it up. You can see the tab locations here:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-32-59.png

Then it should be free to pull up and out. You would do the same steps on the other side.

In summary, here are all the things you'll need from the donor wheel if using a Tacoma donor:

Now, it's time to disassemble partly your Tundra wheel!

Check out this video on removing the airbag assembly and watch from the beginning to ~2:45 min mark for the steps. This is where you'll need that flat end tool like I mentioned earlier to push those airbag retainer clips like they mention in the video.

Now, I was able to just pop the airbag out and keep it connected for installing this trim. You still need to pop the airbag out of place to get to the trim. It's up to you if you want to remove the negative cable or not since you aren't removing any connectors on the airbag itself. I did remove the negative like the video says just in case. Since we aren't removing any connectors it should be okay to not do the battery step.

One word of wisdom I found it was much easier to do all this with the steering wheel inverted like I have in the picture below. I could find the access holes easier and remove the 2 screws that hold that one trim piece in:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-40-41.jpg

So, after following the steps on airbag removal, I just laid mine in the pocket of the opening of the wheel here and kept everything connected:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-41-29.jpg

I started with the volume button side. I followed the steps earlier in this post on the donor wheel. You just need to remove the subassembly on your Tundra wheel and keep the circuit board and rubber membrane in place.

    upload_2025-8-16_6-44-40.jpg

Then, you'll take your subassembly on that side from the donor wheel and install it in place. Here is a fun side by side of the donor vs. the one that came from my Tundra:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-45-34.jpg

Now move to the other side and take the subassembly out and keep the circuit board and membrane in place. Take it to your workbench and remove the left/right seek button and mode button like we did earlier and swap them with your donor wheel one along with the matte black trim around the buttons.

You will need to install the trim outside the button subassembly at this time before you put the newer button subassembly back in place. You can follow the steps of removal like we did earlier and just install in reverse fashion. Just BE CAREFUL - I broke a tab on my silver trim piece and had to fish it out - not fun.

Here is a fun side-by-side of the difference in looks from old vs. new:

    upload_2025-8-16_6-50-56.png

Here is the finished result after it's all back together. I went around the wheel and pressed all the buttons just to make sure it all feels good and went back together okay. I love the new look! Now crack open your favorite “beverage” and enjoy the new look.
