Yep. When I was driving up to AK in 2011, I had a nice convo with a Canadian trooper at a Tim Hortons at a town in BC. Town was named 100 Mile House. 10mm. Glock. Not anecdotal BS.

The best approximation is calculating foot lbs of energy using the formula below:

    Potential Energy = (((Projectile Weight)*(Speed)^2)/450,240))

Secondary consideration would be performance of the projectile:

You want the potential energy to be transferred as completely as possible into your intended target. As such, an expanding/fragmenting projectile is generally more effective against unarmored targets due to the transference of potential energy compared to a full metal jacket that can go completely through a target and keep traveling.

The energy the projectile uses and carries with it as it leaves the intended target is wasted potential energy and useless for the purposes of incapacitating the intended target. It's why the FBI ballistic gel tests want about 18" of penetration with the projectile coming to a complete stop and not exiting.

I'm assuming we are discussing human targets and not grizzly bears...

The math, physics and engineering behind projectile designs, terminal velocities vs intended targets are very interesting.

I started life as a physics major in college...Should have stuck with it as it is 1 million times more interesting than the finance and accounting world but I will leave that lamenting for another time...

Not sure where all this 45 ACP hatred has come from... (yes I do), but it's still very hurtful and possibly racist. Here's one of my favorite 45's I own in 1911 trim. :)

Hell, my EDC is a .380.

But it holds more rounds than a 1911.

Stopping power, as it is bandied about at the gun ranges by all the tacticool nope-erators, is the myth. Its impossible to quantify into anything that resembles a rule like "X stopping power will/won't stop Y target" so it's an awful metric. As @AZBaldy said, the energy formula is the closest you'll get to it being definable, but even then the math doesn't always pan out, because there are just too many variables.

    No. I got a 6.5 PRC. @VelcrowKnight got a 300 PRC.

Better energy should give better performance, but nothing is guaranteed in such an all encompassing term as stopping power.

Mind you, this is a recent mindset change for me after a long convo with a very very analytical minded brother who shoots and researches a ton.

I used to skateboard and inline skate quite a bit (like 6 days a week). I can’t count how many time i would spot shave off my leg or arm hair after i bloodied up a body part.

I also used to install a fair amount of Linoleum and Marmoleum. I got REAL tired of painfully pulling out globs of dried up glue and arm hair with the channel lock pliers that lived in my tool belt. Finally i wised up and would trim down my arm hair fair close with hair clippers the night before an install. It made it WAAAAAAAAY easier and pain free to get the dried up glue off my arms.

As for bicyclists shaving their leg hair…i live out near Portland, and have entered tons of bike races over the years. Usually there are only a couple of us who don’t shave their legs, and i’m one of them.

I was having a conversation with one of my friends a few weeks ago, and he’s just getting into recreational cycling. He’s also recently divorced, and was commenting about how there are quite a few attractive women who bicycle and their sexy spandex that they wear. I gave him a pretty quick reality check and told him that if you’re 20’ another cyclist (at least a fit athletic cyclist, which are very common in PDX), that it’s just about impossible to tell if you’re being a really fit man or a really fit woman. The clothing looks exactly the same between the males and females, the helmets mask what the back of the head looks like, the gloves cover the hands, the built in padded shorts make a man’s butt bigger, and both the men and women shave their legs. I told him pretty much that if the legs on the rider in front of you are super sexy looking, it’s probably a man. Kinda sucks, but it’s true. My friend got super bummed out after i said that.

Today I was working near one of my favorite pizza places that I haven't been to in a good 5 years, so I picked up a pizza for dinner tonight, and I got one of their breakfast pizzas for tomorrow morning. I'm pretty pumped about it.

Need to rant for a bit. So I had a call with a recruiter earlier today that didn't go as he had planned. He called me out of the blue.

    Incoming Wall of Text:

Him: "Hey we have an accountant opening at a local winery, are you interested?"

Me: "Sure, who is it with?"

Him: "It's confidential, you will know if they bring you in to interview."

Me: "Ok, accounting is a pretty broad field, what kind of accounting specifically?"(I don't want to deal with payroll and other boring BS).

Him: "GL stuff, they already have AR/AP folks so it is more advanced accounting."

Me(Trauma from last job): "How many hours a week am I working?, How long have the team members been at this place, CFO, Controller, Accounting Manager?" (I want to know if this place is even financially solvent and what kind of products they make beyond just wine and what the actual brands are)

Him "Very stable. Like 25 years for the CFO".

Me: "Ok, what is the pay?, if it isn't at least $XX an hour I'm not interested."

Him: "Well, they can meet what you are asking but they need someone who is the full package."

Me: "I was a senior analyst for the largest winery on the planet for 5 years. I know the business, finance and accounting inside and out."

Him: "Why did you leave them?"

Me: "I hate Kaliforniastan and wanted to move to Arizona."

Me: "The median price of homes in this area is $700k, I'm not interested in a salary $xx over what In & Out burger is paying."

Conversation devolved from there. Ended with "I'll present your info to the client and let you know if they are interested". I doubt I get presented given my tone but we'll see.

    Rant:

Employers are on crack. They demand these crazy credentials, background and experience. Then when they have candidates who actually have that, they want to pay them with the lint in their pockets...

Then they piss and moan about the fact that there aren't any good people to hire...

I'm sorry but you get what you pay for. Want amazing people, don't be an organization that is constantly turning and burning staff, pay the market rate and give people some flexibility to live their lives. You want me to live in the office, tell me that and I can decide if you are offering live in the office pay, don't couch it in corporate buzzwords and bullshit.

Nope. I’d go through pants about once very two weeks back when i was street skating. Handrails and curbs would eat up the shin area of the pant legs. Then after that there would be blood stains all down the pant legs. I eventually switched to shorts. No doubt my legs got torn up even more, but i didn’t have to buy as many pants! I never did shave my legs at that time. Hindsight i should have before any sk8 session. It would have been less painful to shave with the hair clippers beforehand, rather than accidentally digging into an open flesh wound like a combine tractor.

If they’re cheap on an offer, the. They will fight over every penny on any merit/performance/bonuses.
I WFH. They treat me well. Pay me well. Let me be. Super supportive, been around 20 years, and have great benefits for their employees (that I declined as we get ours through my wife’s employer for $0.00).
You won’t catch me working in an office again. I was always open to hybrid but it would need to be at least 3 days home and 2 office (fortunately we don’t have an office in CO!) and those days are up to my choosing.
