    Hello to all,

After deciding not to take "my free/prepaid oil change" and DIY, this was my second oil change.

My 2024 TRD states 7.7 qts. I used exactly that amt, in addition to changing the filter too. 1 five qt jug and 2.7 qts marked on the 2nd jug. Since I change at my ranch, once i pull the oil pan plug & oil filter, I wk on other things for next 45/60 mins. Essentially, what's coming out is out & done.

Here's the question: After changing oil, driving 100 ft to do oil life update, then i Ck the dipstick, it was nowhere near the "FULL" lines, or considerably below the left threshold line. I'll take a pic after she's been sitting overnight and post it, but what's going on? No dripping or residue either, as of yesterday Aftn / thank you

note, i did push in the dip stick as far as it would go..

Where is the oil line on the dipstick in relation to the high and low marks?

You may still have a lot of oil at top of engine running down. Might have to wait a little while to let it run back down to get a true reading.

It sounds like everything was done appropriately, especially the drainage, but I don’t think you ran it long enough for an accurate reading.

When I put 7.7 quarts in after an oil change, the level is not at the full line, but it's normally more than halfway up on the stick. I consider this normal. If I check the oil level when the engine is at operating temperature, the oil level will have increased due to expansion, and the reading will be much closer to the full mark.

As others have mentioned, I also run the engine for 3 to 5 minutes after the oil change and then let it sit for 10 minutes or so while I work on something else before checking the level.

The dipsticks are incredibly hard to read, and it does frustrate me. I am not sure if it’s the dipstick or the 0W-20.

(P.472). Warm up and turn off
the engine, wait about 8 minutes,
and check the oil level on the dipstick.

oil level should not exceed the refill upper limit
mark and is between the low level
mark and refill upper limit mark

Agree. I guess that's why it says to wait 8 minutes. I never do and I think my reading is obscured by splashing.

I scuffed up the dipstick between the lines/dots so oil level would be easier to see.

Now, oil will migrate down the slippery area and leave marks on the scuffed up part, giving you incorrect reading. If you want more accurate reading, I'd think you have to scuff up a lot more than than.

    :duh:

I guess the millions of vehicles with crosshatching on their dip stick have been reading their oil level wrong for centuries.

Well. And millions of vehicles have been using the wrong oil for centuries.

eddie, thats not what I was saying. If you are going to scuff up the dipstick, you should do the whole thing, because it won't do you any good if only operating range area of the dipstick is scuffed up. If you pour more oil than necessary, it'll roll off the top end and stop at where scuffed up area is, making you rhino that oil level is full, when in fact, it *was* higher.

Millions of dip sticks are only crosshatched in the operating range...nothing wrong with that

I might also add that while you are waiting for the oil to fall back into the sump (about 2+ minutes) pull the dipstick out and leave it out so the tube drains clear and doesn't get oil smeared back in the tube and onto the dipstick when it's pulled out making it difficult to read.

Love the truck. Hate the dipstick tube shape. I think it holds too much oil.

Am I the only cretin who dumps 8 quarts of oil in and walks away without ever checking the dip stick?

Our new Mercedes Sprinter based RV doesn't even have a dipstick, just an oil level in the display when you start it. Thought I'd hate it, but it's grown on me.

I've always wondered why manufacturers use tenths of a quart. Couldn't they just make the pan and/or filter a little bigger to round it up so we don't have to dick around with the odd amount? Our Mazda is the same way at 4.9 quarts. Have always just dumped in 5.

Thank you guys for the constructive comments; they are greatly appreciated.

I am going out this evening and when I return, I will wait 10 min's and ck the oil level, and take a pic so I can post.

PS - I stopped receiving notices that the forum had responses so I stopped cking, randomly did so and here we are...

PSS - One thing I do now, it when I change the oil, I get what's left in the cap of the used 5gal jug, swipe cap w finger, then apply to the o-ring/top of dip stick. This really helps to more easily remove the dipstick next time, vs it feeling like it's welded in there ...

That's obnoxious. They want you to buy a another quart for 0.1? Less than half a cup?

The dipstick in this new tundra is the worst. I used the graduations on the jug to eyeball 7.7qts and called it done. Been meaning to check the dipstick..

    All,

My sincerest of apologies for not posting the pic of the dip-stick to date. I will be traveling 55 miles to ranch this morning, and upon my arrival, I will take dipstick pics at 5 and 10 min's after arrival and post them...I'll do my best to get the best pics possible bc its hard seeing the oil on the pics...see you soon, tstex

I measure 7.7 as well and call it good. The dipstick needs a Kaizen.

I saved one 5 gal oil jug and marked it at 2.7 qts...I fill it to this line. Then pour in one 5-gal, then the 2.7 in and that's it. It would have been TONS EASIER if the total fill was 7.5gal, but the 2oz delta really screws up the numbers on 5 gal containers

Might want to drain out that extra 3.75 gallons of oil from the truck. Might run a little rough until you do, LOL
