10 is the magnification and the 32, 42 and 50 is the size of the objective lens (the lens pointing toward the object)...

50 objective is ideal for marine use and as stated above, quality japanese built fujinons are really the way to go in either the 7x or 10x range. You'll pay a bit for a decent pair, but they'll last you a lifetime.

When you say tough to use, are you referring to the binos making you sick (like dizzy, etc. bouncing around while looking through them) or just couldn't get them to focus well??? Some folks do really struggle w/getting dizzy almost immediately when on glass and on a boat or in the air...

Another option is image stabilization binos; we normally ran Cannon 10x50s when flying in the little birds when we were chasing bad guys manually (using binos instead of cameras or FLIR) and they did a great job of stabilizing the image even w/all the vibration from the helicopter. They were really good for about 600 to 900' AGL. However, I never ran image stabilizing binos on a boat though, just my fujinons...

I have a pair of Zeiss “Duofun” (sp?) that I won as a sales promotion in 1996. They’re 7X32, compact and clear.
Have another pair of Zeiss 10X42 Conquest (Zeiss “value” product)
