I didn't feel that they were dirty since I regularly vacuum, but @Nimitz_ and his carpet cleaner have been in the back of my mind for a week.

It doesn't have to be local but is seems the local hardware store might have some spacers, but just haven't found any. Thought maybe someone ran into this and knew "hey Home Depot has these spacers" or something. It can be from anywhere. Have a toytec kit so likely will start by calling them to see if they can just ship me something. Or buy that cheap $17 kit and just use the spacers.

Yeah I thought of that but I do have 3" lift so it might be a good idea for the CVs. I know that and diff drop impact on oil bath of rear bearing etc are all topics of debate, but it's been on there for 100k+ miles.

Maybe when I need to reboot the CVs I'll just pull the diff drop.

Diff drops have been shown to be worthless. I'd remove it.

 

I thought they preserved the CV axles due to minimizing their angles? Or does it prematurely wear out driveshaft components like U-joints?

 

They only give about a degree or 2 of change, but the lower diff and skid plate reduce your ground clearance. I forgot who but somebody posted a vid of it. It's the Asian dude with an FJ and a 2nd gen RCSB.

 

Someone on here measured, IIRC, and the difference in angle was something silly like half a degree.

That seems a little off assuming a 2” drop with a 36” CV axle length. Arctan(2”/36”) = 3.18 degrees at a minimum. If the CV axles were shorter (which they probably are), that angle would increase even more.

Guess I’ll have to check out the video to see what I’m missing here.

 

Went to a client, removed two old mattresses and back to the house. Loaded up some 600 pounds of bagged grass onto the mattresses and tied it all down. THAT FERMINTING GRASS WAS THE MOST FOUL-SMELLING LOAD WE'VE HAD SO FAR.

Have seen this before and thought about removing it. It reviews theories that the drop benefits CV joint and boots, that a spacer drop is really a tilt so may introduce oil bath concerns on pinion bearing, and spacer drop reduces ground clearance.

Some conclusions from the video seem to be:

• Likely slinging oil diminishes concern of oil bath on pinion bearing.
• Extended boots reduce boot wear concerns that diff drop might help.
• Ground clearance loss from tilt and threat to transferring impacts to tcase.
• Preferring arm style drops that gets more tcase drop (but expensive).
• Or just keeping lift to 2" (as I think @shifty` oft says).

Don't think have the original bolts. So either way, will need to get original bolts or replace the lost spacers to be able to remount the skid plate best.

I didn’t see anything in the video about how much a dropped differential reduces the CV axle angle. Seems reasonable to do if you’re willing to sacrifice some ground clearance to prolong the life of your CV joints.

Not bad. Need to find a power source when the truck is unlocked vs door open, but it’s plenty bright.

Tell that to someone who works maintenance in a chemical plant, where they shim pump shafts to keep the angles right, so they last longer.

Been running it 100k+ miles and did lose a set of factory boots but that's expected and the solution is extended boots however never had cv joint poblems at 2.75" now 3".

On the freeway, @ 70mph, in my Civic. Amazing the airbags didn't deploy.
Good friend had one jump through the side window of his truck topper. They had been camping. It proceeded to destroy all their gear in back.
One of them shot it with a handgun. In a stroke of luck he missed anything vital in the truck.
