I got my engine replaced at 33k miles. I had zero issues with my original engine but decided to get it replaced. I have put just over 3k miles on the new one with zero issues. The engine replacement took 1 day. Overall good experience, the process was smooth. How has everyone else’s been doing with the engine recall?

Here’s hoping you get 300k+ trouble free miles for that ideally very well maintained engine, as has always been the case with Toyota pickup trucks.

When you are on the recall list for engine replacement can you opt out or is it required? I don’t know why anyone would be on the fence about it? Thanks. D

It's a safety recall. It stays active until every last vehicle is done. Why some makers are entering their 2nd decade chasing Tata airbag recall dodgers.

No company can force you to bring your vehicle in. It costs the company money to keep after recall dodgers for years. They can at their choosing incentivize compliance with free merch, cash, free service, or warranty extensions. Rarely happens but if a company wants to clear it's books down the road

Some lawyer will chime in about liability if you dodge a recall and your rights if you or another is hurt when the vehicle fails. But at this point minor fender benders turn into cas grab legal actions so not sure recalls move the needle on inherent liability risk of driving.

To what extent are they replacing these motors; short block, long block, crate engine ( new or refurbished)?

Lot depends on your dealer. Based on my conversation yesterday my local dealer is falling behind the phased recall release by date. 85 people on the waiting list already and they have done only 15 so far. I can't go on the list until my phase opens. At that point it I will be 100+ on the list which looks like a 2+ year wait if they don't increase the pace.

If my engine fails and they try and hang me with a short block hobby project rebuild I am going lawyer up immediately

Do the crate motor maybe a mythical result if your dealer options are swamped.

I am going to ping the selling dealer to see where their list stands. But if this is going to be another Toyota recall I am going to be begging for years to close I may just throw in the towel and move on.

I'm no expert on the matter, but I don't think dealerships can arbitrarily change the official remedy (crate engine) for the safety recall. You should get a crate engine no matter how long it takes your dealership to get you in.

In my mind, every mile you get out of your existing engine is a bonus, assuming it doesn't blow.

The longer the wait the higher the failure odds.

If an engine fails in recall does it get a short block or a long block? Given how backlogged dealers are appearing to be a short block maybe all that's available

That is the scenario I am concerned about. I will not accept a short block given what I have seen working at my local dealer. That is where I would get my lawyer involved to demand crate engine or a check.

Exactly what I worry about... and worse, what if it happens 1000 miles from home with the wife, dog and gear aboard? Then it goes to a dealer in that location.

Currently my truck is more local. But yeah if the recall backs up leaving many people with a worry everytime they leave the house for years then is not good by Toyo.

Again, I think there are cases of engine failures that originally got short block repairs, but they are still getting a new crate engine under the recall. That would obviously be a PITA, but... perhaps someone can confirm.

The guys who are screwed are owners of hybrids, or trucks that fall beyond the recall dates. They have no choice but to accept the short block repair. If they are beyond the factory warranty, and don't have the extended warranty, they'll be dealing with a $30K repair out of pocket.

That said, if a stock trade had the same failure odds as my truck's engine has, I'd load up on that trade in a heart beat.

@WineryCowboy I was lucky, I got the call from my dealership to bring in my truck in 2 weeks. I dropped it off and they had a new Camry ready for me as a loaner. The next day I got the call my truck was ready.
