I have a 22 limited with 35,000 miles. I have noticed when driving on interstate and I go to give it extra gas to pass, I feel the truck/transmission shift really hard. Its not like I'm driving the truck hard. I'm only talking about going from 75-85 to pass. This is the only time it does this. Anyon else have this problem. Is it something I should have looked at. TY

Hard or fast? Is the “hard” shift on the downshift to pass or shifting back up?

That’s called passing gear. If you mash the throttle, the transmission is supposed to downshift fast to keep up with the throttle input. Ide be more concerned if you pressed the gas and it took a long time to shift. That’s bad. Fast downshifts are a good thing. The faster it shifts, the less heat is produced at the clutch packs.

Ok I understand what you're saying but it just downshifts harder than any other truck I have ever owned. Its almost like a really hard jerk and popping sound at the same time. It must be nothing because it never does it any other time. TY for your time.

Did you just get the truck? Or have you had it since new and something has changed?

I have had the truck since 20,000 miles, I can't remember when it started as I don't drive on interstate very often, but it has been doing it for a while.

40K is about the time they recommend a transmission service. It looks pretty straightforward.

My 22 did the same thing, even after 40k miles and a transmission service. It would clunk hard while downshifting on the thruway. When I brought it up to the dealer they told me it’s normal because it’s jumping a few gears . My 24 does not do this at all.

Depending on how quickly you want to get from 75-85, transmission is known to jump 3 gears back. Accelerating quickly at highway speeds is no easy task.

You can try gradually, but quickly start pushing gas on the highway and you'll see transmission jump back one, then another, and then another gear.

(Especially on 3rd gen, you have 10 speeds)

Came to this thread because mine does it on the upshifts. Passing 65 - 85mph, generally smooth on the downshift, but bangs hard on the upshift at higher rpm’s and under moderate to heave throttle input.

Transmission serviced at 50k miles. Started doing it around 40k. Got 70k now and it’s getting worse.

    Anyone else experience this?

Mine also does this at higher speeds, not positive what speed it starts but it's always on the highway above at least 60mph. Been happening since at least 8k miles (currently about 13k), maybe since new.

I think I know what you are describing but don't have any valid solutions.

My problems are stop and go traffic, I like to roll and not use my brakes and going from 0% to ~5% throttle I can feel a thunk in the body sometimes. I have replaced my trans fluid at 51k miles and it actually operates super smooth I mean buttery until day 2 and we are back to the weird behaviors at low speed. I do remember one time I was trying to pass at 70 mph and upon a downshift the truck jerked pretty hard and sort of bounced around until it matched the engine speed and kept going, not sure if that jerking is what you feel but I believe you, these 10 speeds are either really smooth at times or the complete opposite. I think it's to do with gearing and tuning but we will never know since some people don't have any hard shifts at all which I find a little suspicious unless the way we are operating the truck is wrong.

    It's anything but straightforward.

The fluid needs to within certain temperature parameters and there's a chintzy plastic straw to deal with to get the right fluid level.

What was wrong with a drain at the bottom and a fill hole on the side that was at the correct fill level?

    Progress?

&. My 15 Tacoma was the same way. They make blue tooth OBD readers and apps or other devices to read transmission temps. Drain what comes out, fill the same amount or a little more. Get the trans to temp. Remove the check plug. Let it trickle and your done. If you have to add. Add while it’s running till it comes out of the check plug.
