Borrowed the wife's camera and actually have pics this time. :)

My rearview mirror seems to be delaminating or whatever you'd call that.....is that held on by just this one screw? If so I'll try and order an OEM replacement this week.

I thought they were glued directly to the glass, maybe a mount is glued on and the mirror is screwed to the mount. Take the screw out and remove all doubt.

Mount is glued. Mirror slides on to the mount and is held in place with just that 1 screw.

It's a set screw. Should look something like this once removed..

That's off my 2.5gen but I'd imagine 1st gen is similar.

I bought one of the aftermarket replacement mirrors that has a backup camera display in it and the replacement tailgate handle with the built in camera from Master Tailgators. Should be here on Saturday just in time for a weekend project. Didn't want to replace the factor radio or get a screen to mount to the dash for backup camera for my daughter. I used my FiL's Tacoma with that type of backup display and it worked well enough.

That might work for us....unfortunately my factory radio has been replaced by a fairly crappy touchscreen. The truck has a backup camera at the moment but it's not the greatest. :( I'd like to replace it at some point.

Further, I could see the time where we might have long boards in there so the tailgate would be down.

Ideally I'd like the ability to switch between a rear-mounted camera and one on the rear of each of our trailers. :bananadance:

My daughter will be driving this back and forth to school this year. So, I want to give her the safety of being able to see behind her when she is leaving school. She's only been driving for a year so far. :)

If I have to use it with the tailgate down, I should be able to see behind pretty well or trust in my mirrors.

To be fair (please don't take this as a jab at all because it's meant for everyone), the rear-view camera should only be used as a driver assist. Every driver should learn to turn around and look behind them when backing up.

I totally agree there. I use my backup camera in my CR-V only when I can't see normally. For her, because of the rake of the truck stock, the tailgate blocks her view directly behind for a good 15-30 feet. She's not short either at 5'-9". I plan on leveling the front when we redo the LBJ and front shocks this fall. That should help out some as well. She won't have the same issues of seeing over taller vehicles in parking lots like I do in the CR-V. It's not as bad as a car, but no where near as easy as a full-size truck.

This is the warning I'm going to give you. Mine was doing the same btw.

BE CAREFUL when removing. On our older vehicles, it's probably never been removed. You can VERY EASILY break/crack your glass. I recommend to fully remove the set screw. Grab ear the base and GENTLY try sliding the mirror upward. You may need to GENTLY wiggle back and forth as you lift up GENTLY.

Why do I keep saying GENTLY in caps? Because the metal mirror base and the mirror keystone on your window have likely bonded together, and that bond can, often times, be stronger than the bond the adhesive has on your glass. The end result can be you yanking a scallop of your windshield out, or if you start tapping on the base, you can easily crack your windshield.

Sometimes you get lucky, you pop off the screw, grab the base and wriggle it a bit, then it slides right up. Just go slowly. Be GENTLE. And remember it goes upward.

Once the mirror is out, that's a pretty standard keystone, unlike some of the earlier Tundras that used the Donnelly mounts. Really any mirror that supports a standard keystone will slide right on there.

I was afraid of something just like that! I appreciate the warning.

So how hard are Tundra windshields to replace?

    Kalannar97,

What I hate is not knowing for sure how far to back up! What I normally do, minus a backup camera, is set the parking brake, get out and look. This can get tedious. LOL

    Frankly, I'd like a front-mounted camera too. :)

A professional might take an hour or less. I had one done and he cut the old one out and cleaned up the area and glued a new one in place. Not really a DIY like the old cars and trucks with a "gasket". I've pulled those in myself when I was painting cars, non professionally, mostly my stuff. Now you can't get OEM rubber or automotive finishes.

Thanks for the warning @shifty` Is there anything that might help loosen it up beforehand, spray wise? I have a couple days to soak it with something before the parts come in.

I would test to see if it'll come off first. So far I've been able to wriggle off every one I've ever tried. But I've seen some people get hamfist with theirs on here and other forums, and damage the windshield, which is why such a stern warning.

I've had older GM vehicles that the glue has just failed and the mount just lets go of the windshield. No previous windshield replacement was done prior to that happening. I've also seen what you have described where there is a chunk of the windshield removed, usually by some snot-nosed teen messing around and hitting the mirror.

I will be careful when I go to change it out this weekend.

Yeah, Pontiac was the worst, and now you mention it, I guess I did crack one of my windshields, and that was the one. It was an '89 Lemans hatchback, the ugliest car I've ever owned. But it was the cheapest thing I could find after running my 4dr '70 Impala into a tree (blacked out behind the wheel, veered off the shoulder).

Parts are scheduled to arrive tomorrow but it will probably after the temps reach 90+ with even higher heat index. I hope to get everything prepped and ready to start Sunday morning while it is still relatively cool.
