This thread is dedicated to engine swap experiences. Let's not derail it, please. Thanks.

Apologies if this is not the correct thread for this question but I was just in for an oil change/service, 2nd oil change after engine replacement in April. It's a 2022, ~51k miles. I remember before I had the engine replaced the dealer service advisor said at a prior service visit that it needed a "Fuel Induction Service", I skipped it at that time and they just told me the same thing at this last change. Would this be a valid thing after a new engine? I'm not sure if the parts being serviced would have been replaced with the engine swap or not. When I asked the service advisor they gave me some vague answers so I skipped it again.
I couldn't even get a clear answer from the dealer about what the service exactly consisted of.
Curious if that was a BS service after engine swap.

Had my engine replaced this week. Dropped off 9:00 Tuesday and received a call stating it was done Wednesday around 16:00. Picked it up Thursday morning.

Was done by Precision Toyota in Brandon Manitoba. Everything went as smooth as possible and they washed it after. Overall a positive experience.

First impression of new engine is good. Feels a hair more responsive and mileage is at least as good if not better and it’s not even broken in yet. Idle might be fractionally rougher at startup but feels smoother once up to temp. Will drive it another few weeks and report back.

Did have an interesting experience when I asked about warranty tho. Was told it was only 30 days!!! I was a little irate but decided to call Toyota Canada. The mothership said it was 12months/20,000kms. Called dealership and discussed with service manager. He said he would look into it. He did, called me back and confirmed the 12/20. Had a bit of an aneurism thinking that I just had a problem free engine for 125,000kms swapped for one with a 30 day warranty!!! Was quite relieved after.

The apparent ignorance of some of these service managers never ceases to amaze me. How could he not know what the warranty was for the new engine?

Glad you had a quick turnaround and the new engine replacement appears to have went well.

Got mine back today. Dropped off on 7/7 for scheduled 7/8 install. They didn't start until 7/18. Give a bunch of excuses, which fits their track record so far. I will never recommend Doxon Toyota in Washington. Out of the 3 years I've had my truck they've had it close to two months.

As for the actual install - I'm a bit nervous they got something wrong. I know its still breaking in but it smells super hot, is hot under the hood, feels less responsive and mileage is about 4-5mpg less than before the install. Also it smells like the tech that test drove it spent the whole time chain smoking.

I disagree.. I would rather get my truck back with the smell of weed over cigarettes. Personally, cigarette smoke ruins a vehicle. First, it embeds into everything and it's pretty hard to get rid of. Second, it's down right disgusting. Again, just my opinion.

So hypothetically, if someone had a '23 model with 60,000 kilometers when the long block was replaced, and got a warranty of 12/20 they'd lose 20,000 km of powertrain warranty on the engine? Or 20,000 km on top of the 100,000 if they were already over 100k?

Engine shut off twice, with loud rattling before replacement.
Dealer used: Steven Toyota Harrisonburg VA
Miles put on by tech: 7
Got the old and new serial numbers of engine from paperwork that I signed but wasn’t included on my copies.
Old air filters left in place
    Truck not cleaned
After driving it off the parking lot the “check engine” “ parking brake malfunction “ “rear radar parking light” all came on.

drove 350 miles home, disconnected the battery for 30 mins, once hooked back up, lights came off. Still did a OBD scan for engine codes, bunch showed up, assuming from when the engine was being reconnected, surprised they didn’t clear the codes.

also found one harness on the driver side behind the engine that was unplugged, not sure what it was connected to, looked important, so I connected it back.

New engine still running like a top. Fuel economy still on par or a tad better. Have noticed a high pitched whistling sound, almost like air flowing out of something twice now after turning it off. They replaced the fuel line at the same time so don’t know if it’s evap related. Anyone else experience this or know what it might be? Doesn’t affect the truck at all it would appear.

My truck is working on a month in a couple days of sitting at the lot dead. Sept 2022 build date. I believe that put me in a TBD Phase… will I be waiting forever? So far my experience is horrible. No one from the local service to Toyota Customer engagement can give me an ETA and loaner is not a truck. RAV4 is my loaner. About to fill up gas cans and load trash in it. Asked Toyota to buy my truck back. Don’t want to derail but at least my friends get loaner trucks at Ford and GM… lol

Sorry to hear that... I'm at over a month in my Camry loaner... I was told by the dealer when they gave me the Camry that if I needed something more like the Tundra I could check back with them on a regular basis to see if one of their RAV4s comes available

Just got word this morning my engine was approved! Sounds like about a couple weeks and I am back in business! Not sure if someone here helped me out but if so… thank you! Don’t know what I’m gonna do with my Tundra after I get it done but that can wait for another day…

I just got my 22 SR5 TRDOR back from Ourisman40 in Edgewood, MD. They had me in a 25 Limited for a week, just like they said when I dropped it off. So far, about 50 miles on the new engine and it feels like the turbo lag is reduced but maybe a little sluggish. The dealer was great to work with to get it done. Another dealer in the area that is much bigger (cough*Jones*cough), didn't want anything to do with the engine replacement for some reason but Ourisman was more than willing. Great experience.

A follow up. Ive had my truck back for a week now. Mileage is still a little lower than before (about 500miles on new engine). Attempted to use 4wd today on a dirt road. 4hi flashes and 4lo stays lit. Got a message that there is a fault in AWD system. Par for the course with this truck. Im at 60.7k miles so I have little faith that they'll fess up to causing the issue.

K&N air filter. Front windows tint, RC front leveling kit.

I had same experience with Doxon Toyota they had my truck for a month instead of one week. I've driven over 1k on a new engine and so far all is good.

As a follow up - they got the 4wd issue fixed in under and hour. Loose connector.

Tires, TRD aluminum Skid Plate, 14 inch screen protector, and X15 Tonneau cover.
2022 Tundra SR5 TRD Off Road, miles: 29,432 in April 2025.
Dealer for service: Miller Toyota, Manassas, VA.

No known engine issues before replacing. During recall service for the fuel tube, I made an inquiry about the recall and my VIN was listed. Service Advisor (Miguel) ordered it and notified me when it came in. It took about three weeks max, (that I recall.) I dropped the truck off, and they provided me a new TRD Tacoma (pro, I think, not sure though, but completely decked out) since they didn’t have Tundras. It was ok, soft ride, but I felt squished. Miguel walked me into the bay, and they had the crate opened for me to see. I was impressed with that chunk of metal.

I met both techs who were assigned. One was a master tech. He told me it would take no longer than two full days, maybe some clean up on the third morning. I told them to take their time as I know they become busy, and everyone wants things done right. Miguel said that I could keep the Tacoma as long as I needed, but he’d let me know me know status after day one. Once they pulled my engine out, he sent me photos via text of the old one sitting on a tire and the mechanic in my housing cleaning it up. He called late afternoon on the second day and told me it was ready. I didn’t believe him, but then the master tech told me this was upwards in numbers of their teens being done. He said they learned real quick after the first short block replacement prior to official recall.

When finished, they ran the truck through the car wash for me. From inquiry to driving off the lot, I felt like they had my best interest at heart and my truck. The new engine runs smooth. It smelled of new oil and lubes, metal burning for the first three to four miles, but I expected that. It occurred when I bought it. I’ve tested each of the functions such as eco-mode, sport mode, regular, low crawl, and even in 4L for a short bit in down the straight away in the neighborhood. It’s awesome to see that nothing really changed as in driving. Maybe a sense of being a bit smoother. There were no warning lights, error messages, or malfunctions listed after the experience.

It currently has just over 31K miles on it. I have nothing best recommendations for Miller’s Toyota and especially Miguel and the techs. They did a wonderful job and kept me informed throughout the process.

Great report and Manassas isn't too far from me. My usual dealers are Fitzgerald in Gaithersburg, MD or DarCars Toyota Frederick. I could also get to Ourisman in Rockville. But I have never had a big repair from any of them nor have I seen any reports here of engine replacements at any of these. So, maybe worth the drive to VA.

Have any forum members had an engine replaced at Fitzgerald, DarCars or Ourisman in MD?

Fitzgerald was the dealership I bought my unicorn from upon allocation. I paid msrp via them. Miller is way closer IRT maintenance and service. I can't recommend them enough, especially my service advisor.

I got my Tundra at Coleman in Bethesda, only one who had anything close to what I wanted. Also paid MSRP which sucked, but better than the $3k over they were asking at the time. I bought my previous Tacoma from Fitz in late 2008 and got a fantastic deal. But they never seemed to have a Tundra like I wanted.

I DIY my maintenance but have gone to Fitzgerald for recalls. They seem to be super busy and they tried to give me a loaner last time with TPMS light on. No way I was driving away like that. While that doesn't directly reflect on their mechanics that seemed pretty sloppy.

Here is my experience with the engine replacement recall:

    2022 SR5
    July 2022 build date
Dealer: Earnhardt Toyota in Mesa, Arizona
    Mileage ~40k

I had ZERO issues with the truck before the replacement. Couldn't complain about really anything. Didn't have any noticable throttle lag and the shifting seemed fine.

Mods: TRD Pro take off suspension, slip on exhaust, and LT285/75r18 tires

Experience: Dealer called me on Friday and told me they have a long block assembly for me. I dropped it off on Monday morning, July 21st. The dealer gave me loaner options of a Tundra, Highlander, or a RAV4. I chose the Highlander since it was the only one I hadn't yet driven. (Wife loved it. I thought it was just ok.) Dealer called me 2 days later!! Truck was done and ready Wednesday around 4PM. I picked it up Thursday, July 24th. Dealer stated there was no break in required and it was good to drive like normal.

    Post replacement experience:
I've had it back for 3 weeks now. I did not baby it after getting it back. Drove it like I always do. Everything feels the same and I'm get the same mileage. About 15 mpg. I use sport and Tow+ modes often. So I had 3 uneventful weeks. Until yesterday. I was driving home and floored it for fun (not rare for me). Went from 45mph to about 60mph. When I let off the throttle, my check engine light came on and a message displayed something like "reduce power and contact dealer". It felt like a misfire or it wasn't running in all cylinders. I pulled over, turned the truck off and on again and the issue went away. I did a couple more pulls on the way home and it didn't return. Not sure if it's an issue or just let off the throttle at the wrong time... Either way, going to keep an eye on that.

Overall, I had a great experience with my dealer and would recommend them.
