    Hi, the Tundra riders...
I need a new battery. My mechanic said it would need to have a computer reset. Is there a special way/procedure to do it ourselves? If you are in the boonies and some reason you have to disconnect the battery, there is a good chance there is no computer to reset the vehicle computer...

    What d'yall think?

Computer reset isn't a bad thing.
It will reset your MPG, distance to empty, etc, stuff you probably don't use anyway.
It will take a few tankfuls of gas to figure that out again.

If you want to retain everything, you can buy one of these to swap your battery..

    Needs a 9 volt battery
Amazon.com: Battery Memory Saver | >> Save : Computer Code, Radio Code, OBD11 | Code 12 Volt Attaches to Power PortCar/Truck/Van : Automotive

    Connects to your auto battery.
Amazon.com: Car Memory Saver Protection Connector OBD2 Battery Change Saver Memory ECU Power Off Protector Replacement OBDII Battery : Automotive

Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.
If you have a 2007-2021 your truck may not start on the first turn of the key if you disconnect the battery.
Mine will turn over and die.
Just start it again, and you'll be good..

This isn’t a bmw. Theres no ecu reset needed. Just replace the battery and be on your way.

And in case you misunderstand, your ECU doesn't "need a reset." By disconnecting the battery ECU resets as a matter of course. So don't let your mechanic charge you for a "reset."

No offense to you at all, but your mechanic saying something stupid like this probably means he's looking to price gouge you. I've replaced my battery before, and like it was already mention the truck turned over, died, and started right back up.

Bullshit. I replaced the battery in my 21 Tundra this summer and probably had it out of the truck for an hour. Nothing happened. My 24 Civic with auto stop start, same thing. Had the battery out for 5 months over winter and it took a whopping 300 feet of driving before all the safety nannies woke up.

Me thinks if you hang around here for a while "My Mechanic" can easily become "you" and save a shit load of money.

That's a good thing to know.
About to replace the original battery in my 2019, and probably would have had a moment of anxiety not knowing about the shutdown.

You see, this was my intention right at the beginning... GO TO COSTCO. But no, HE wanted me to buy HIS battery. Plus, now I feel like an idiot myself...

Nope, you asked for another opinion. Many would have paid for the battery and the "reset". But even they aren't idiots, really, just uninformed.

Certain vehicles require an ecu reset so the alternator knows what the new battery voltage is at so it can adjust its charging. My dad’s Audi and my mom’s Benz are that way.

These are 2.5gen tundras. Feed them gas and 12v and they just do their job.

My 2014 starts on the 2nd try after disconnecting the battery. No need for a reset on mine.
