Every now and then I will run across a can of green beans, or something else that has been in the cabinet and has passed the "best if used by _____" date. My wife is inclined to get rid of the offending item whereas I don't pay much attention to them. If it passes the sniff test, it is good with me. What say the masses?

I pretty much stick expiration dates. If something is just past its date, I'll give it a once over, but if its months+ past, straight to the trash can.

Depends what it is and how it is stored.

If in doubt, throw it out! That said, I have eaten some less than ideal food while traveling abroad and it didn't kill me or even make me wish I was dead, but damn it was hard to do.

No kidding. 96% of mayo is seed oil based anyway. Might as well drink drain-o.

Canned goods are good for a very long time; that's the point of canning in the first place. In my opinion the food is already ruined during the canning process, but still safe to eat if you can't get anything better. Anything with dairy in it goes bad quickly once opened and they are obvious when bad by either the smell test or mold. Best by dates do not mean that the food is not safe to eat, only that the producer wants you to believe that the quality will deteriorate after that date. Baked goods either get stale or moldy when they go bad. Cheese lasts a long time and I have cut off the moldy parts and eaten the rest with no issues.

Expiration dates are typically EXTREMELY conservative. If the color or smell changes, then throw it out. You can make milk last a bit longer by at least shaking the container daily, even if you aren't pouring any. Milk spoils partly because the solids settle out. Shaking the container keeps it mixed up.

Just buy food that has a lot of chemicals in it. Makes the food last longer and taste better.

Wish I read this and was reminded a couple of days ago..
I opened a bottle of Fairview protein from Costco and took a sip to have myself throw up right after.. plus it felt like my tongue got burned.
Going to try to return the whole pack today..

If it is spoiled, shaking it up won't make it better. Daily shaking it just makes it last longer before it spoiils.

If you're talking about Fairlife, that is unusual. I drink that a lot and have never had one that went bad.
