So I know the drain and fill procedure has been gone over a million times but I just did it for the first time and have a question.

the truck was cold after sitting for a day or two of not driving. I pinned open the trans cooler and drained the pan then after reading a write up it said to pin it when checking but never mentioned when draining.

I drained about 4.5quarts (which sounds about 1.5 more than an others say) and put 5 back in - did the warmup procedure going from drive to neutral til the drive light stayed on. Cracked open the overflow til it trickled out.

any harm in pinning it when draining? Took it for a 2 mile drive and it seemed to shift smoother into reverse and into gear.

No problem, I do the same, since the cat gets hot... its easier to pin it cold.... then pull the pin with pliers when done.

It’s a good sign you took 4.5 out and put 5 in (assuming more than .5 didn’t come out when you checked). It’s far easier for these transmissions to be too low than too high, overfilling up to 1 quart appears to be beneficial vs 1 quart low can cause major issues.
