Gen 3 cooling

    Has anybody heard anything about louvered hoods, vent mods or anything pertaining to bringing down engine bay temps on the Gen 3 platform? It’s definitely too hot under there. Worried about cooking turbo oil especially, but as a general rule you should be able to touch airbox plumbing without burn risk. I see this being a problem for the long term owners.

    295/70/18 Duratracs - more mods being researched...
    Agreed - it's heat soaked often....... I think there was an attempt at a vented hood by someone but don't think it launched.

    I did this on my old 80 series LC prepping for the TRD blower.... it reduces cut oil temps by almost 20 degrees in TX heat per the scanguage.

    the vents on the side are Rover side vents....

    There was a thread about this several months ago this may have been the hood that was talked about. I don’t think anyone here pulled the trigger on it, maybe they did:notsure:

    For starters, modern turbo cars should all have secondary water pumps that cool the turbo CHRAs after shut down.

    I believe I found the one for the Gen 3 a while back.

    oil coking was a thing for oil cooled turbos only, hence turbo timers were a thing in the 90s.

    the heat evacuation is solely for underhood temps only and would not really affect oil temps, as those are regulated by the cooling system which is positive pressure when rolling.

    Good deal. I had read that they had multiple cooling veins, but I wasn’t aware they were that efficient. Was going to install some BOV’s and found out right away that you can’t do it after a short drive. That’s what got me thinking about engine bay temps and the oil obvious cook off problem.

    Yup. You can do the turbo smart recirculating valves, but nothing vent to atmosphere.
    Messes with metered air and fueling.

    Seibon makes a carbon fiber vented hood. Goes for about $1800. Not sure how effective it is.

    1.5 Wescott lift 20" wheels on 37s Stillen Trucontroller
    Magnuson has a aftermarket radiator and air intercooler intake. Also adding a trans cooler will help.

    Their vented hoods work great. We run these on the gen2.5
