Just shopped used trucks. F-150s are holding their value roughly the same as 3rd Gen Tundras. Rams and GM trucks are way behind. 2.5 Gen Tundras are easily the highest value.

All Toyota's body-on-frame from before the Toyota "turbogate" are rising in value. When my family gets together on the holidays, it looks like a used Toyota lot from the 2010's. All 4Runners, Tundras, GX460s and one unibody Highlander. Those looking to replace their vehicle with a newer, used version have only seen prices rise the past 18 months.

Here is a scrrenshot from Carmax current offerings for 4WD 1794s. Considering the difference in the original sticker price and the dealer adjustments people were paying to get '22s, that's a crazy comparison. That '21 is almost certainly selling 4 years later with 42k on the clock for more than it's original sticker.

2021 Tundra SR5 CrewMax TRD Sport, purchased new in Nov. 2021. 48k + TTL, it was the time when markups were insane so I was semi-ok with MSRP, sadly. When I walked in it was a 10k markup (58k). Discovered it was a poor dealership and haven't been back since, thankfully I have options.

Something I found interesting for at least my area (Ohio), no pokes to 3Gens owners, but adds to the conversation. Leads me believe that 2Gen trucks are holding good value. As of today, 7/12/25.

    2021 Tundra SR5 (56k miles)
Trade in- is 6k less than new/MSRP, 43k.
Private Party- is 3k less than new/MSRP, 45k.

2023 Tundra SR5 (similar equipment to mine, as best I could determine with 56k miles) Don't have an MSRP to reference.
    Trade in- 38k.
    Private Party- 42k.

    -KBB.

The 2.5 gens are definitely holding value. That's part of why I'm in a 3rd gen. When I decided to come back to a Tundra I was originally looking for a low mileage 2018-2021. I just couldn't stomach paying more for a used one than I paid for my 2019 when it was new, and also taking more miles than when I traded it back in 2022. I just couldn't reconcile that when buying used and my history of terrible luck with used rigs.

Why I would not never buy another GM. They have the absolute best lawyers in the world.

They have deflected multiple class action law suits because their warranty is limited to manufacturing defects not design defects. As long as they manufactured their defective design to spec you have no warranty rights

This pretty much matches my experience last month. I bought a 2017 Limited with 28,000 miles on it for $40k. I don't have the original window sticker, but I'm almost certain I paid just about what it sold for in 2017.

Yup. The T24A-FTS has a few variants, but they do not distinguish the "Type" for the T24A-FTS like they do the V35A-FTS - Type '17 (Car) and Type '21 (Truck/SUV).

Kentucky is the first for the Highlander/Grand Highlander/Lexus RX/Lexus TX variant of the T24A-FTS. Even the Lexus NX gets this engine. And because the NX and RX are produced in Japan and Canada, the T24A is produced in both Japan and North America.

TMMAL produces the truck variant that goes into the Tacoma/Tacoma HV. Your citation is correct there.

I would need to go back and watch the videos of Sheldon talking about the Tacoma and what they did for it to be "truck duty worthy" compared to the Highlander/Grand Highlander/Lexus RX/Lexus TX.

I seem to remember when those Highlanders came out with that motor, we were doing SEVERAL cam gears and those little oil filters for them do to debris being stuck in the gear/filter. Some cases I seem to remember it being worse and we did just a couple of motors on them.....Does that sound right or ring a bell @sudobash?

When a popular vehicle in demand price rises dramatically in a period of a few years you often see disproportionate resale values

I had an uncle that bought one of the first Cummins 3500 with mega cab. Like a 2005. He sold it for more than he paid 10 years and 125k miles because a new one albeit with option bloat was a lot more than his old one.

I had a Duramax I that listed for $50k. I pays $39k Next Gen 4 years later was $65k. It was at least 5 years I could have sold that truck for more than I paid

That will not happen with any of the COVID inflation trucks. New 1500s would have to be $100k by end of decade for a current one to sell for $70k. Economy will not support 2m trucks a year at $100k each in 2030

It not just a Tundra thing. There are oddities in the market place time to time. This is one of them.

    All I know is:

    1. I trust Toyota to resolve these issues more than I trust GM, Ford, or Stellantis nowadays which they all practically get recalls every day.

    2. This powertrain especially the iForce Max is leaps and bounds better in every way over the 5.7 whether it be performance, towing, or other truck duties (which I can say that because I have actually owned both).

    3. The platinum 10 year / 125k mile $0 deductible warranty that most people on here purchased is relatively cheap in the scheme of things and covers almost everything.

Drive what you want and be happy is what it all comes down to! @Mallcrl thank you for updating us with the process and I’m sorry again that this happened to you, but I can bet that Toyota is really looking into your truck and I’m sure it’s probably under the microscope right now.

In every way….except for reliability, historically the reason Toyotas sell and hold resale so well.

    1. I agree. It's why I moved back to Toyota from Ford. They seem to be putting more effort into resolving issues.

    2. I think "leaps and bound better in every way" is exaggerated. It's better on paper for HP (barely) and TQ, and will tow "better" as far as the feeling, but splitting the same work load among more cylinders is how you get longevity. Lower stress means longer life in an engine which is why diesels live longer, barring the insertion of CAFE shit that tanks everything it touches. They are lower stress.

I think a huge portion of that "better" feeling is due to the transmission. To illustrate this, look a the F150 5.0 and the 3.5. The TTV6 is more powerful and tows "better" but it's a better comparison because from 2021 on they are both using a 10 speed transmission. The TTV6 will get up to speed faster while towing, but it gets worse fuel economy while towing than the bigger V8 using the same transmission.

If you had the 5.7 with a 10 speed behind it, I think you'd see a much smaller gap between the two powertrains on the completely subjective "better" metric being used here. The new powertrain is more advanced, for sure, but I don't think it's leaps and bounds better.

I can make the same argument to authority that you do "I can say that because I have actually owned both" but it's retarded and doesn't add any credibility. It's kinds like the idiots who think they are smart because they have a degree. Just as education doesn't make someone intelligent, having had both trucks doesn't make either of us an authority on them.

The good news is that you can just query the OP’s responses. Because if you’re looking to follow what he’s going through and the details specific to his story, with his thread, you’re not going to get that here without wading through many, many pages of thread shitting.

On the reliability scale the 5.7 is right up there with ship anchors and blacksmith anvils.

Further complicating this thread is the OP isn't the owner of the '25 with the engine failure. The owner has chimed in with periodic updates, which I appreciate and specifically look for thru all the other old and tiresome noise in this thread.

Thread would be a lot simpler if not for all the extraneous and irrelevant 2 and 2.5 genner comments.

You may want to put in a few reserve posts below that. IDK what it is, but I'm pretty sure there is a size limit on a post, and you may run out of room. That, or you just ask mods to move posts around if other people start posting in there and breaking your continuity.

BTW, I hate that you are dealing with this, but I thank you for sharing the journey with us.

Unfortunately most of them aren't looking for a forum on the internet to express their lack of disappointment in their truck. Internet forums tend to attract enthusiasts first and complainers as a close second. But honestly, who cares what anyone else thinks about your truck? Or Tundras in general? If you're enjoying it and it's trouble free, that's great.

Why? I do not need to convince anyone of how good my decision is for me. My money, my choice. End of discussion.

In the same vein, others can do whatever they wish with their money.

To me, worrying about a truck's future resale is like the guy who doesn't bang his girlfriend now to keep it tight for the next guy. :D
