    Sushi:

had a gaggle of relatives up to the lake.

one was a vegan. (I know because SHE TOLD US)

well, she was telling us how she found vegan sushi at HEB (Texas Grocery store).

before my wife could stop me, I said "what the hell is that?"

the story she told, I'll paraphrase....a rice ball with seaweed.

today's kids are so much more stupider than we were.

Now, I'll just shout down the well:

I learn so much about folks when we host them at the lake.

some folks can just chill and be themselves.
those are the folks that are settled.
Calm, cool, successful (most of the time).

some folks are just plain weird.
They don't know how to enjoy life.

maybe, because life is so simple to enjoy.
you simply need the brain power to be able to do it.

social media brains are jumbled when it comes to sitting around a fire.

We are very welcoming for kids to try surfing (especially the girls).
we go out of our way to make it fun.
and we are damn proud of the kids that get in the water and try it.
takes guts to give a physical activity a go, these days
we make sure the whole boat cheers when they get up for the first time.

how rare is it, these days, for these cell phone addled kids to do something REAL?!

    and I'll add another observation:

    ready?

kids are a result of parenting.
    good=good, bad=bad.

As a parent that worked hard to raise good humans....it's easy for me to see the manifestation of bad parenting.

and how boring is it to be a vegan, while the rest of us eat the Meatzilla pizza?

You know how to tell if a stranger is vegan without having to ask them?

Just make eye contact and they'll tell you.

My sister has been a vegan for many years.
It has been a pain in ass for family gatherings making sure she and her grifter daughter have something to eat.
Over those years, she gained well over 100 pounds.
She started Ozempic last year and lost a lot of weight, but I'm still dumbfounded how a vegan can be fat...:cool:

vegans, in general, are a blight to the human race.

they make life less fun for the rest of us.

if you are a vegan, just shut up and be a vegan.

    enjoy your malnutrition quietly.

On a related topic, the grocery store was selling something called "plant-based chocolate chips".

Last time I checked, cocoa was a plant.

Many vegan diets are high in carbs, sugars and can have highly processed "vegan alternative" foods that are just as bad as any other processed food. I have heard many folks who are on long term vegan diets have issues with teeth and cavities due to lower vitamin b levels and also all of the sugar they end up consuming.

I imagine something along the lines of the vegetarian cuisine out of India would be a healthier option compared to the typical American vegan diet as the Indian food is based around natural ingredients developed over a thousand years.

Disclaimer - I am a carnivore. Only experience I have related to vegans is through other people and anecdotally...

    **Edit**

I wanted to add that there are degrees to veganism. I had a close friend whose wife was vegan and through her I learned that being vegan can extend way beyond just diet but into clothing and other aspects of life depending on how far down the rabbit hole you take things.

From a global population perspective, veganism can't be sustained and people would end up starving to death.

Whatever this forum told me to do

    this.

    on July 4th,

Bar-A-BBQ in Montgomery TX had a special run of pork belly burnt ends. (1 inch smoked kissed squares)

in addition to our debaucherous meal, we added a pound of those delightful morsels to our meal.

    hot-damn they were good.

    Who'da thought, right? Crazy.

I agree with this completely, but there can still be less than stellar outcomes when raising kids despite the best efforts of good parents.

My own parents raised 4 kids. All raised essentially the same way. Mom and Dad there the entire time, good values, etc. A happy home by all measures.
3 of the 4 (thankfully, I am including myself in this group) are well adjusted, productive members of society that raised similar families.
I had (past tense, he passed at the age of 58) a brother that spent 95% of his life as the black sheep of the family.
Alcoholism, drugs, never a steady job and generally poor life choices all around.
Once he finally got a handle on the addictions late in life, they had taken their toll on his health and he died of a heart attack. (Lots of underlying health issues.)

I have a daughter that went off to college for 4 years and she came back a different person.
To say our worldviews are different is a massive understatement.
I am still proud of her, but unfortunately we have a hard time accepting each other's points of view.

Like me. I'm a vegan, but not a strict vegan. By that I mean I eat beef and pork, but by today's standards that doesn't exclude me from being in a protected group.

Okay, I'm not vegan, I'm just really fucking annoying, so I fit in there.

My doctor says my cholesterol is slightly high so he wants me to cut down on sugar, including:
    • Pop - I don't drink it
    • Juice - I don't drink it
    • Sugar added to coffee or tea - don't do that
    • Breakfast cereals - I only eat the one that's 100 whole grain whole wheat with no sugar in it
    • Bread - I only eat 100% whole wheat bread with 2 grams (0.07 oz) of sugar per two slices. I haven't looked around that much but I doubt I could find bread with less
    • Burgers and fries - I don't eat that many burgers and never any fries

The only other thing I can think of is cutting jam or honey out of my sandwiches and just having peanut butter on its own.

I'm not a doctor, I just play one on TV.

Not that you have much of a sugar problem, but that bread - whole wheat or not - metabolizes directly into glucose. So that PBJ is really just a sugar and protein sammich. All starches convert to glucose quickly, so although they have good nutrients, potatoes, rice, corn, and all grains do the same.

Also, might be good to check other sources for the harm of having slightly high cholesterol. Especially if the doc wants to put you on a statin. Those things are bullshit.

cutting all that crap will lower your triglycerides.

which is very good to do.

is your hdl/ldl ratio still good?

i have slightly elevated cholesterol, but my ratio is good.

For now, he wants me to make some minor dietary changes - he says to reduce those things, not cut them out entirely - so I don't have to go on meds.
He didn't mention my ratio. In theory, I could look it up myself if I could get the online system to work properly.

He didn't mention it. On the rare occasion that I have meat, it's usually chicken, though I guess I eat ground beef fairly regularly too. I'd probably die if I had to survive without red meat, however.

If he's focused on reducing your sugar intake, it's as likely as not the number he's looking at is triglycerides. FWIW, liquor spikes triglycerides too.

My last lipid panel, triglycerides were 216 (borderline high is above 150; high is above 200), but that was non-fasting. At the same time, LDL was 116 (high is above 130); and HDL was 50 (low is below 39); and the doc said nothing. If your triglycerides aren't way out of whack, the 'risk ratio' for whether you're at risk for vascular problems is LDL/HDL, and should be under about 3.5. Either way, reducing added sugars is a good idea.

What happened to @Pillslinger. He used to be on here all the time...

    raising Triglycerides?

having a bowl of these in the breakroom will do a more than adequate job of pinging triglycerides.

Had an initial interview this morning for a position that is 100% remote never go into the office type job. Seemed to get positive feedback but you never know. I have been mentally preparing to move out of California again as I have hit my personal limit of California craziness. I am hoping this job or one like it will be the employment part of the puzzle finally falling into place.

Not sure where I will go this time around. Going back to Arizona is definitely an option as I'll have to stop off in AZ no matter what to grab my SBR's and suppressors I have kept in storage there since moving back to California. Maybe somewhere like Montana, West Virginia or someplace along those lines.

Never lived in a place where it snowed so I'm not sure if it would be a good fit for me or not. Moving would realistically be 6 months out at the earliest.

When my brother was working fully remote he put most of his stuff into storage and would move to a different city every couple months, just doing the airbnb thing while he tried to find a place that he would want to call home. I know he had a good time with that. Maybe an option?
