Am I insane for considering paying 23K for a 05 DC?

fastlane wouldnt ever make a vid of a best gen at double gross, but load up your trailer and lemme hike it up the ike gauntlet. 30.5” tires and 60mph wouldnt be too much of a problem for 2nd gear & high rpm. I bet a 30hp shot of n2o, to make up for the ethanol, and i could hang.

Lol, i take that back. Double gross is 3x the weight of the truck, and thats asking for trouble. Doesnt mean i wont try.

 

Even if the truck is perfect, remember that when parts fail, those parts are beginning to go out of production.

You will be upside down in that truck, make sure those LBJ were OEM.

As others have said, if you get into a minor fender bender, insurance will probably total you out and cut you a check for $8K.

Y'all are all getting this wrong. That's the "wife told me to list it so I did" price. I'd do the same thing. Well, no I wouldn't. I'd get rid of the gf for trying to get me to list it.

 

Well, that seems like a nice truck. $23k is steep. But when it comes to mods, it would seems he did some things right. Dobinsons are good quality. Looks like he has JBA Upper Control Arms. Big Brakes. Nice cap. Lots of up to date maintenance. I think mid to high teens is reasonable for that truck. A lot of it depends if you want to mod it your way or if you want a turnkey first gen tundra you won't have to do hardly anything to for years. If you want the latter, this is a good truck - but you should try to talk him down a good bit.

Also - it's your money. I slightly overpaid for mine. Whatever. I could've driven my corolla for another year or two trying to find the perfect deal, but I didn't want to keep watching forever. Gotta be patient, but at some point pull the trigger.

 

I wouldn’t car that old you will be constantly wrenching and replacing parts due to age alone unless you know and enjoy wrenching it will still be a money pit and way overpriced

 

I can tell you for a fact insurance won’t pay for a new door. You either got a used OEM door that was repainted or if he spent extra cash, a door skin/panel to replace the dented one.

No VIN on the side of the door would tell you if the door was replaced. If the VIN is still intact, bring a magnetic stick-on to see where they placed the filler in case the outer panel wasn’t replaced.

 

Bro if all of us weren’t constantly encouraging other people to spend their money on Tundras and Tundra stuff this website would close in a week.

 

you can call them and pay for extra insurance but they couldn’t care less how much you paid or how upside down you are if someone crosses yellow lines and totals it. Did they ask how much you paid for it when they added it to your policy? No.

I towed up the Ike with my Ram 2500 and thought it was weak sauce wondering if that was the real place they tested on
I later towed up the Ike with my Tacoma and was really hoping the hill would end
I towed a Limited 4R 600 miles a few weeks ago and while it was no big deal on the flat land, it really sucked and worked the hell out of the truck in big rolling hills in Texas. I did however make it no problem but i didnt go fast and understood that i was only going to get about 10mpg.
I dont have any issue towing a vehicle or tractor with my truck, i dont mind it a bit, but i dont plan on towing coast to coast. I used to pull a big race trailer coast to coast chasing races and had no problem running speed limit +7-8mph for 500+ miles and not even break a sweat. My 1GT was definitely not a choice i would choose to pull at max weight for 2000 miles on a time crunch. My ram trucks had zero issues running speed limit +8mph for 20+ hours across country pulling heavy, i wouldnt dare do the same with my Tundra. I love it but i surely aint gonna work it that hard.

 

fair, I just hope anyone reading it who pays 3x KBB understands. I paid $3k over KBB and at least I understood the potential downfall. I have friends who are upside down on new trucks and it’s rough.

 

We're right at the fine line with these trucks as far as age and price competition.

Would I sell mine for 23k? No, because I can't really purchase anything equivalent that would make it worth making a couple/few thousand (which is a chunk of money don't get me wrong).

If it were an extra vehicle, then yeah, I'd probably sell it.

On the other hand, would I pay 23k? Probably not unless it was "the one" and I couldn't source another like it.

The situation plays a lot into it. I get rid of 'full coverage' on any vehicle at 7 years because I know I'm going to get boned by insurance anyway.

 

It's not like these trucks are a '97 Porsche 911 Turbo S in US spec, that retailed for 150k when new, but goes north of 5x that now. There were less than 150 made in domestic spec IIRC, and who knows how many still exist. It's a pickup truck. One that was made by the tens of thousands. They're not overly rare. I dunno if I could justify paying that for a clean example. But I'll still sell mine for $25k all day
