… if you do clean them at all?

im referring to the control arms, tie rods, etc.. the stuff right below the engine.

or if you clean under your car in general, please share any tips and tricks.

im afraid to pressure wash down there as it may lead to rust or messing up anything.

Just soap and water and some elbow grease. You can spray some citric based degreaser on it if you want. But a good scrubbing goes a long way.

I opt for the undercarriage wash at the car wash.

Pressure washing can lead to getting water into spots you don't want it, like grease fittings, inside tie rod boots, etc, but if you just pay attention to those things, it's usually fine. I use regular car wash in there and an old rag or brush to wipe it all down, or simple green also works too.

Some simple green as @crikeymike already pointed out is all I use. I have some brush attachments that hook onto a power drill that I use for all of the outward facing stuff, and then I use a Mothers power ball for areas that have stickers or anything that is tucked in (like a shock body under a coil spring).

Works great rinsing the salt water from under the boat trailer, too.
