I'm a big fan of DIY, but that route sketches me out.

I had bought my overlay before AJT got their C&D from Toyota and can't comment on the quality of the current offerings in the wild, but overlays can still be found on eBay and Etsy https://www.ebay.com/itm/356810939199

    Not at all
It’s below the rear seat back so I don’t notice any lost view

AJT has GOVx pricing if you're eligible... both are good vendors!!!

Any recommendations for bed covers? There are do many out there. The retrax are nice, but it takes up space of bed.

I'm currrently running an ArmorFlex... and have enjoyed the flexibility of it. If you need to transport something tall, simply open it up, use the prop rods, etc. and the bed is basically as usable as it would be w/o the cover. If you need to transport some wood and just want to open the first panel then you do that, etc...

It sits flush so it looks nice, and the 'armor' flex is bedliner coated on the topside of the panels so you don't have to worry about small scratches etc ruining the appearance; just don't beat it up and you're good to go. I've put tools, lumber, etc. on top of the panels and they are holding up well.

Just know that no bed over is waterproof; that being said, if installed properly water intrusion is minimal as long as the drain chanels and such are installed properly.

Security w/a locking tailgate is reasonable, but sure it can be pryed open to someone who's determined. So, if you transport high dollar or sensitive type of equipment such as tools, firearms, etc. then I'd run a drawer system in conjuction w/it. You'd lose bed space, but a system similar to the Decked drawer system is lockable and water tight...

If you're looking for a bed cover that is more water resistant/secure then I'd look at the one's done by ARE that are a single piece lid that closes over the top of the bedrails
